Pharmaceutical Inorganic Chemistry (BP104T)

Section-Wise Detailed Answers

SECTION A – Short Questions Explained

1. What is Pharmacopoeia?

A pharmacopoeia is an official reference book that contains detailed standards for pharmaceutical substances and preparations. It provides information regarding the identity, purity, strength, and quality of drugs. Pharmacopoeias also include analytical procedures, storage conditions, and permissible limits of impurities. These standards ensure that medicines manufactured and distributed in the healthcare system are safe, effective, and of consistent quality. Each country usually has its own pharmacopoeia, such as the Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP), which is widely used in India for maintaining drug quality standards.

2. Define Limit Test and Explain Why It Is Necessary

A limit test is a semi-quantitative analytical test used to detect and control small amounts of impurities present in pharmaceutical substances. These impurities may arise during manufacturing, storage, or contamination from raw materials. The purpose of a limit test is not to measure the exact amount of impurity but to ensure that the impurity does not exceed the permissible limit specified in pharmacopoeial standards.

Limit tests are necessary because impurities can affect the safety, stability, and therapeutic effectiveness of drugs. For example, impurities such as arsenic, chloride, sulphate, and heavy metals can be harmful if present above certain limits. Therefore, limit tests help maintain drug purity and protect patient health.

3. Functions of ORS

Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) are used to treat dehydration caused by diarrhea, vomiting, or excessive fluid loss. ORS contains a mixture of electrolytes and glucose that helps restore the body's fluid balance.

The main function of ORS is to replace lost water and essential electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and chloride. Glucose in the solution facilitates the absorption of sodium and water in the intestines. This process helps maintain proper hydration and prevents complications associated with dehydration.

4. Define Achlorhydria

Achlorhydria is a medical condition in which the stomach does not produce hydrochloric acid. Hydrochloric acid is normally secreted by gastric glands and plays an important role in digestion by activating digestive enzymes and killing harmful microorganisms present in food.

In achlorhydria, the absence of hydrochloric acid can lead to impaired digestion, nutrient deficiencies, and increased susceptibility to gastrointestinal infections.

5. Unit Used to Measure Radioactivity

Radioactivity refers to the emission of radiation from unstable atomic nuclei. The amount of radioactivity present in a substance is measured using units such as the Becquerel (Bq) and the Curie (Ci). The Becquerel is the SI unit of radioactivity and represents one radioactive decay per second. The Curie is an older unit that represents a much larger amount of radioactive activity.

These units are commonly used in nuclear medicine and radiopharmaceutical applications.

6. What are Haematinics?

Haematinics are substances that help increase the formation of hemoglobin and red blood cells in the body. They are commonly used in the treatment of anemia, a condition characterized by a deficiency of red blood cells or hemoglobin.

Common haematinic agents include iron preparations, vitamin B12, and folic acid. These substances support the production of healthy blood cells and improve oxygen transport in the body.

7. Uses of Buffer Solution

A buffer solution is a solution that resists changes in pH when small amounts of acid or base are added. Buffer solutions are widely used in pharmaceutical and biological systems.

One important use of buffer solutions is maintaining the pH of pharmaceutical formulations to ensure drug stability and effectiveness. Another use is maintaining the pH of biological fluids in the human body, such as blood, which must remain within a narrow pH range for normal physiological function.

8. Expectorants with Example

Expectorants are drugs that help loosen and remove mucus from the respiratory tract. They increase the secretion of fluids in the airways, making mucus less viscous and easier to expel through coughing.

An example of an expectorant is ammonium chloride, which is commonly used in cough preparations to facilitate the removal of mucus from the lungs.

9. What are Emetics?

Emetics are substances that induce vomiting. They are used in cases of poisoning to remove toxic substances from the stomach before they are absorbed into the bloodstream.

An example of an emetic agent is copper sulphate, which stimulates the vomiting reflex when administered in controlled doses.

10. What are Cathartics? Give Example

Cathartics are substances that promote bowel evacuation and relieve constipation. They increase intestinal motility and facilitate the elimination of waste from the digestive system.

Examples of cathartic agents include magnesium sulphate and sodium phosphate, which act by drawing water into the intestines and stimulating bowel movement.

SECTION B – Long Questions

Impurities and Sources of Impurities

Impurities are unwanted chemical substances that may be present in pharmaceutical products. These impurities can originate from various sources during the manufacturing, storage, or handling of drugs.

One major source of impurities is raw materials used in drug preparation. If the starting materials are not pure, impurities may remain in the final product. Another source is manufacturing processes where incomplete reactions or side reactions may produce unwanted substances. Contamination during storage and packaging may also introduce impurities into pharmaceutical products.

Understanding the sources of impurities is important because impurities may reduce drug effectiveness or cause harmful side effects.

Limit Test for Arsenic

The limit test for arsenic is used to detect traces of arsenic impurity in pharmaceutical substances. Arsenic is a toxic element, and even small amounts can be harmful to human health.

The test is based on the Gutzeit method, where arsenic present in the sample is converted into arsine gas by reacting with zinc and acid. The arsine gas reacts with mercuric chloride paper, producing a yellow or brown stain. The intensity of the stain is compared with a standard solution containing a known amount of arsenic.

If the stain produced by the test solution is lighter than or equal to the standard stain, the sample passes the test.

Antimicrobials

Antimicrobials are substances that inhibit the growth of microorganisms or destroy them. These substances are widely used in medicine to prevent and treat infections caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other pathogens.

In pharmaceutical inorganic chemistry, certain metallic salts and compounds possess antimicrobial properties. For example, silver nitrate and mercury compounds are known for their ability to kill microorganisms. Antimicrobials may act by disrupting cell membranes, interfering with metabolic processes, or inhibiting enzyme activity in microorganisms.

SECTION C – Essay Questions

Limit Test for Chloride

The limit test for chloride is used to determine whether the amount of chloride impurity present in a pharmaceutical substance is within the permissible limit. The test is based on the reaction between chloride ions and silver nitrate in the presence of nitric acid.

When silver nitrate is added to a solution containing chloride ions, a white precipitate of silver chloride is formed. The turbidity produced by the precipitate is compared with that produced by a standard chloride solution. If the turbidity of the test solution is less than or equal to the standard, the chloride content is considered acceptable.

Antacids and Ideal Properties

Antacids are substances used to neutralize excess hydrochloric acid in the stomach. They are commonly used in the treatment of conditions such as acidity, heartburn, and gastric ulcers.

An ideal antacid should neutralize gastric acid rapidly without causing systemic alkalosis. It should not produce excessive carbon dioxide, which may cause discomfort. The antacid should also be non-toxic, stable, and capable of maintaining the pH of stomach contents within a safe range.

Examples of antacids include magnesium hydroxide, aluminum hydroxide, and calcium carbonate.

Radiopharmaceuticals

Radiopharmaceuticals are radioactive compounds used in medical diagnosis and therapy. These substances contain radioactive isotopes that emit radiation detectable by imaging instruments.

Radiopharmaceuticals are commonly used in nuclear medicine for diagnosing diseases such as cancer, thyroid disorders, and cardiovascular conditions. For example, radioactive iodine is used to diagnose and treat thyroid diseases. Technetium-99m is widely used in diagnostic imaging because it emits gamma radiation suitable for medical imaging.

Conclusion

The Pharmaceutical Inorganic Chemistry exam focuses on the fundamental role of inorganic substances in medicine. Topics such as limit tests, electrolytes, antacids, antimicrobials, and radiopharmaceuticals are essential for understanding drug quality control and therapeutic applications.

A clear understanding of these concepts helps pharmacy students ensure the purity, safety, and effectiveness of pharmaceutical products.
