(SEM III) THEORY EXAMINATION 2022-23 TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION
This question paper has been designed for students enrolled in the B.Tech First Year (Third Semester) course under the subject Technical Communication (KAS-301). The purpose of this examination is to evaluate the student’s understanding of essential communication principles, their ability to apply these principles in academic and professional contexts, and their competence in oral, written, and visual communication skills required in modern engineering environments.
Technical Communication is a critical component of engineering education. Engineers must not only possess strong technical knowledge but must also be able to communicate ideas, instructions, designs, and technical information clearly, accurately, and professionally. This question paper tests the learner’s ability to grasp theories of communication and transform them into real-world communication practices.
The syllabus covered in this examination includes the fundamentals of human communication, barriers to effective communication, verbal and non-verbal communication, public speaking skills, listening skills, professional writing, report structure, resume drafting, proposal writing, paragraph development, and organizational communication patterns. Students are also examined on essential soft skills required for professional success such as interview preparation, group discussion, presentation skills, communication etiquette, and interpersonal skills.
The question paper is divided into three structured sections (A, B, and C) to ensure holistic assessment:
Section A
This section includes short, concept-based questions that test the student’s foundational understanding of key topics such as syllables, sound patterns, communication flow in organizations, oral communication principles, and the differences between communication methods. These questions ensure that students have mastered the basic vocabulary and conceptual framework of technical communication.
Section B
This section requires descriptive and explanatory answers, encouraging students to demonstrate deeper thinking. Questions may involve explaining barriers to effective communication, outlining techniques of paragraph development, describing methods of public speaking, and writing short types of technical documents. The focus here is on the student’s ability to write coherently, logically, and professionally.
Section C
The final section is application-oriented. Students may be asked to write a proposal, prepare a resume/CV, analyze communication processes, explain organizational upward/downward communication, prepare email drafts, or discuss the importance of group discussions and interpersonal communication. This section evaluates practical writing ability and assesses whether the student can apply theoretical knowledge to real-life technical communication scenarios.
Overall, this question paper thoroughly examines the student's ability to understand, analyze, and apply the core principles of technical and professional communication. Upon successful completion, students should demonstrate improved clarity in speech and writing, confidence in public speaking, enhanced professional etiquette, and the ability to produce clear, concise, and accurate technical documents — all essential competencies for future engineers and professionals.
