(SEM IV) THEORY EXAMINATION 2022-23 MATERIAL SCIENCE

SECTION A — What This Section Is About

Section A contains 10 short, 2-mark questions that check your fundamental understanding of material science concepts.
These questions cover the basic definitions and core principles such as phases, phase diagrams, Gibbs phase rule, alloy steels, HSLA composition, true stress–strain, deformation behavior, ferromagnetism, superconductors, composite materials, and shape memory alloys.
This section evaluates whether the student has basic conceptual clarity of all essential material science topics before moving to higher-level numerical or descriptive questions.

SECTION B — What This Section Is About

Section B consists of any three long descriptive questions, each of 10 marks.
This section tests your ability to explain concepts in detail, derive relations, and interpret diagrams.

It includes derivations like the lever rule, explanation of TTT diagrams, reasons for ductility or brittleness based on slip systems, hysteresis loop in ferromagnetism, and the complete processing steps of ceramic products.
These questions require structured explanation, diagrams, reasons, and clarity of microstructural behavior of materials.

SECTION C — What This Section Is About

Section C requires attempting one part from each question pair and contains deep conceptual or derivation-based problems.

It includes important topics like defining all elements of the binary eutectic phase diagram, derivation of Gibbs phase rule, explanation of hypo- and hypereutectoid steels, detailed statement of Fick’s laws, creep curves, hardness test methods (Brinell, Rockwell, Vickers), superconductivity curves, polarization mechanisms, classification of fibrous composites, and explanation of carbon nanotubes.

This section evaluates deep theoretical knowledge, ability to interpret diagrams, compare material behaviors, and derive fundamental laws.
