(SEM I) THEORY EXAMINATION 2024-25 ENVIRONMENT AND ECOLOGY
This question paper for B.Tech Semester I (2024–25) in the subject Environment and Ecology is designed to assess a student’s conceptual understanding, analytical ability, and awareness of environmental issues. The questions span multiple core areas of ecology, environmental science, sustainability, pollution management, and environmental policy. The paper is divided into three major sections (A, B, and C), each focusing on different levels of difficulty and depth.
🔹 SECTION A – Short Answer Questions (Basic Concepts & Fundamentals)
Section A contains 7 compulsory short-answer questions, each testing foundational knowledge.
These questions relate to:
1. Environmental Segments
Understanding the major components of the environment such as atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and biosphere.
2. Factors Maintaining Ecosystem Balance
Ecological stability, food chains, nutrient cycles, biodiversity, and interdependence of species.
3. Renewable vs Non-Renewable Resources
Differences in availability, replenishment rate, examples, and sustainability concerns.
4. Nitrogen Cycle & Its Role
How nitrogen flows through ecosystems and its importance for plant growth and soil fertility.
5. Causes of Environmental Pollution
Air, water, soil pollution and human activities contributing to degradation.
6. Greenhouse Gases
Major gases responsible for global warming—CO₂, CH₄, N₂O, CFCs.
7. Role of NGOs in Environmental Protection
Community participation, awareness campaigns, conservation initiatives, advocacy, and policy influence.
This section mainly tests basic understanding and recall (K2 level) related to CO1–CO5.
🔹 SECTION B – Descriptive Questions (Applied Understanding & Analysis)
Students must attempt any three out of five questions. These require more detailed explanations and relate to deeper topics:
1. Public Environmental Awareness Strategies
Communication methods, campaigns, education programs, and the role of media.
2. Water Quality Assessment & Sources of Water Pollution
Key parameters (pH, BOD, COD, turbidity, TDS) and causes like industrial discharge, sewage, fertilizers, etc.
3. Diseases Caused by Environmental Pollution
Health impacts of air, water, and soil pollution; diseases like asthma, cholera, cancer, skin diseases.
4. Global Warming Causes & Greenhouse Gas Emission Sectors
Fossil fuels, deforestation, industrial emissions, agriculture, transport sector.
5. Challenges and Opportunities in Environmental Protection
Legal framework, public participation, technology, sustainable development, and policy gaps.
This section evaluates understanding, explanation ability, and application of concepts.
🔹 SECTION C – Long Answer Questions (In-depth Concepts & Case Studies)
Students must attempt one question from each set. These questions require structured, conceptual, and elaborate explanations.
