(SEM I) THEORY EXAMINATION 2023-24 ENVIRONMENT AND ECOLOGY
This question paper evaluates the student’s understanding of environmental science, ecology, pollution, sustainability, human health, waste management, and global environmental challenges.
The paper is divided into three structured sections (A, B, C) designed to test conceptual clarity, analytical skills, environmental awareness, and application-based understanding.
SECTION A — Short Answer Questions (2 × 7 = 14 Marks)
This section contains seven short questions, each aiming to check basic concepts and factual knowledge.
Topics include:
1. Ecology Knowledge
Father of ecology in India
Need for environmental education
2. Basic Ecological Concepts
Difference between producers and decomposers
3. Pollution & Environmental Issues
Whether any energy source is pollution-free
Major causes of water pollution
4. Ozone Depletion
Ozone-depleting substances (ODS) and examples
5. Environmental Legislation
Key provisions of the Environment Protection Act, 1986
This section checks definitions, basic understanding, memory-based environmental facts, and short explanations.
SECTION B — Descriptive Questions (7 × choose any 3 = 21 Marks)
Students must attempt any three questions. These require detailed explanations and conceptual reasoning.
Topics Covered:
1. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)
Steps, process flow, significance
2. Energy Flow vs Nutrient Cycling
Difference
Importance of nutrient cycles like nitrogen, carbon, phosphorus
3. Noise Pollution
Effects on human health
Preventive measures
4. Climate Change & Acid Rain
Scientific evidence of climate change
Causes & environmental consequences of acid rain
5. Population Explosion
Causes (mortality decline, fertility rate, migration etc.)
Negative impacts on resources, pollution, and ecosystem balance
This section tests analytical ability and conceptual depth, encouraging real-world environmental understanding.
SECTION C — Long Answer / Analytical Questions (7 marks each)
This section includes four long-answer questions, out of which students must attempt one question in each block.
Question 3 — Ecology & Sustainability (Choose 1)
3(a)
Reason for fewer organisms at top of an ecological pyramid
Limitations of ecological pyramids (inverted pyramids, no decomposers, difficult quantification etc.)
3(b)
Achieving sustainable development (economic, social, environmental balance)
Causes of environmental crisis
This tests understanding of ecological structures and sustainability principles.
Question 4 — Water & Health (Choose 1)
4(a)
Types of water-related diseases
Methods to prevent them (purification, sanitation, hygiene)
4(b)
Health effects of fluoride toxicity (dental & skeletal fluorosis)
Explanation using schematic representation
Focus: Environmental health and public hygiene.
Question 5 — Solid Waste Management (Choose 1)
5(a)
Difference between hazardous & non-hazardous waste
Types of solid waste management techniques
5(b)
Current challenges in solid waste management in India (urbanization, segregation issues, landfills etc.)
This emphasises waste classification and modern waste management issues.
Question 6 — Global Issues (Choose 1)
6(a)
Impact of global warming on climate change
Effects of global warming (sea-level rise, extreme weather, biodiversity loss etc.)
6(b)
Solutions to paddy straw burning
Harmful environmental effects (smog, soil health, greenhouse gases)
Focus: Climate science and environmental hazards.
Question 7 — Social & Institutional Roles (Choose 1)
7(a)
Importance of women’s education in environment & society
7(b)
Activities of NGOs (awareness, conservation, advocacy)
Issues faced by NGOs (funding, politics, transparency etc.)
This highlights social responsibility and environmental participation.
Overall Scope of the Paper
This question paper assesses student capability in:
Ecology fundamentals & environmental science basics
