SECTION A
Attempt all questions in brief (2 × 7 = 14 marks)
(a) Key characteristics of a project
A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result. It has a clearly defined objective, a fixed start and end date, limited resources, and specific constraints related to time, cost, and scope. Projects are unique in nature and involve a certain degree of risk and uncertainty.
(b) Agile methodology
Agile methodology is an iterative and incremental approach to software development that focuses on flexibility, customer collaboration, and continuous improvement. Instead of delivering the entire product at once, Agile delivers working software in small increments, allowing quick response to changing requirements.
(c) Stages of project life cycle
The project life cycle consists of four main stages: initiation, planning, execution, and closure. Initiation defines project goals, planning involves scheduling and resource allocation, execution focuses on development and implementation, and closure ensures delivery, documentation, and review.
(d) Three forms of presenting a project schedule
A project schedule can be presented using Gantt charts, Network diagrams (PERT/CPM), and milestone charts. These tools help visualize task sequence, duration, and dependencies.
(e) Activity-based approach
The activity-based approach focuses on identifying all project activities, breaking them into smaller tasks, and estimating time and resources for each activity. This approach improves accuracy in scheduling and cost estimation.
(f) Earned Value Analysis (EVA)
Earned Value Analysis is a project performance measurement technique that integrates scope, time, and cost. It compares planned work, completed work, and actual cost to assess project progress and forecast future performance.
(g) Role of leadership in project management
Leadership plays a vital role in project management by motivating team members, resolving conflicts, guiding decision-making, and ensuring alignment with project goals. Effective leadership improves communication, team morale, and project success.
SECTION B
Attempt any three (7 × 3 = 21 marks)
(a) Significance of Software Project Management in today’s industry
Software Project Management is essential to ensure timely delivery, cost control, and quality assurance in complex software projects. It involves activities such as planning, scheduling, risk management, quality management, and communication. Methodologies like Agile, Waterfall, RAD, and Spiral help manage changing requirements and technological complexity in modern industries.
(b) Significant features of RAD model
The Rapid Application Development (RAD) model emphasizes quick development using reusable components, prototyping, and user involvement. It reduces development time, allows early feedback, and improves customer satisfaction. RAD is suitable for projects with well-defined requirements and short delivery timelines.
(c) (i) Risk identification (ii) PERT technique
Risk identification is the process of recognizing potential events that may negatively affect a project, such as technical issues, schedule delays, or resource shortages. Early identification helps in proactive mitigation planning.
PERT (Program Evaluation and Review Technique) is a network-based scheduling technique that uses optimistic, pessimistic, and most likely time estimates to calculate expected project duration and manage uncertainty.
(d) Cost monitoring techniques and their effectiveness
Cost monitoring techniques include budget variance analysis, earned value analysis, trend analysis, and milestone reviews. These techniques help track actual expenditure against planned cost, identify overruns early, and take corrective actions to keep the project within budget.
(e) Stress management techniques for project staff
Stress management techniques include workload balancing, clear communication, time management training, counseling support, team bonding activities, and flexible work schedules. These techniques improve productivity, reduce burnout, and enhance job satisfaction.
SECTION C
Attempt any one (7 marks)
(a) Stepwise project planning process with example
Stepwise project planning begins with defining project objectives, followed by identifying deliverables and breaking them into tasks using Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). Next, resources and time are estimated, risks are identified, and schedules are prepared. For example, in a software development project, planning starts with requirement analysis, task allocation, scheduling, and risk planning before coding begins.
(b) Risk evaluation techniques used during project planning
Risk evaluation techniques include qualitative analysis (risk ranking and probability-impact matrix) and quantitative analysis (decision trees, simulation, and expected monetary value). These techniques help prioritize risks and allocate resources effectively for mitigation.
