(a) Names of States in Ancient India
Ancient India consisted of several states and kingdoms known as Mahajanapadas, such as Magadha, Kosala, Vatsa, Avanti, Kuru, Panchala, and Gandhara.
(b) Contract Theory of the State in Ancient India
The contract theory suggests that the state originated when people voluntarily accepted a ruler to maintain law, order, and justice in society.

2(a) Stages of State Formation in Ancient India
State formation in ancient India evolved gradually from tribal communities to organized political entities. Initially, clans were led by tribal chiefs. Over time, agriculture, surplus production, and trade led to the emergence of kingdoms. Administrative systems, taxation, standing armies, and codified laws strengthened state structures, resulting in powerful Mahajanapadas.
2(b) Decline of Buddhism in Early Medieval India
Buddhism declined due to loss of royal patronage, revival of Hinduism, internal divisions among Buddhist sects, and invasions that destroyed monasteries and learning centers. Gradually, Buddhism was absorbed into Hindu traditions.
2(c) Implications of Philosophy in Education
Philosophy shapes educational goals, teaching methods, and values. Indian philosophy emphasized holistic development, moral values, self-realization, and spiritual growth, influencing the Gurukul system and modern education alike.
2(d) Harappan Water Management System
Advanced water management systems have been unearthed at Harappa, Mohenjo-Daro, Dholavira, and Lothal. These include wells, reservoirs, drainage systems, and rainwater harvesting structures.

4(a) Characteristic Features of Brahmi Script

6(a) Metallurgy in Ancient India
Ancient Indians excelled in metallurgy, producing high-quality iron and steel. The Iron Pillar of Delhi reflects advanced knowledge of corrosion resistance and metal processing.
6(b) Colonial Rule – Indian Perspective
Colonial rule exploited Indian resources, weakened traditional industries, and caused economic drain. However, it also introduced modern education, legal systems, and infrastructure.
7(a) Mural Painting – Definition and Examples
Mural painting is artwork created directly on walls or ceilings. Famous examples include Ajanta cave paintings, Ellora murals, and temple paintings, known for natural colors and storytelling.
7(b) Fifth Veda and Dance Components
Natyashastra is considered the fifth Veda, representing the essence of all four Vedas. Dance components derived from it include Nritta (pure dance), Nritya (expressive dance), and Natya (drama).
