(SEM III) THEORY EXAMINATION 2024-25 ENERGY SCIENCE & ENGINEERING
ENERGY SCIENCE & ENGINEERING – Full Paper
TIME: 3 Hours | MAX MARKS: 70
This examination assesses a student's understanding of the scientific, engineering, and environmental aspects of energy generation, conversion, and utilization. The paper covers classical thermodynamics, nuclear energy, solar and wind technologies, bioenergy, and modern sustainability solutions such as green buildings and energy audits.
The question paper is divided into three major sections—each designed to test specific cognitive skills: knowledge, comprehension, application, and analytical reasoning.
SECTION A – Short Answer Conceptual Questions (14 Marks)
This section evaluates the student's grasp of fundamental definitions and concepts from quantum physics to renewable energy systems.
Topics Covered:
• Energy Quantization (Quantum Mechanics)
Understanding how electrons occupy discrete energy levels and why energy exchange occurs in quantized packets.
• Nuclear Binding Energy
Significance in nuclear stability, mass defect, and energy release during nuclear reactions.
• Solar Photovoltaic Device Characteristics
Essential features such as semiconducting materials, junction behavior, efficiency, and I-V characteristics.
• Solar Energy Basics
Definition, source, and role of the sun as a renewable energy provider.
• Lift Concept in Wind Turbines
Explanation of aerodynamic lift, airfoil design, and blade orientation in wind energy extraction.
• Biological Energy
Energy produced by metabolic processes, bio-organisms, biomass conversion, and biochemical energy sources.
• Concept of Green Building
Sustainable design focusing on energy efficiency, water conservation, and environmentally responsible construction.
This section tests precision, clarity, and conceptual command.
SECTION B – Medium-Length Analytical Questions (21 Marks)
Students must attempt any three questions. These require understanding, explanation, and diagram-supported reasoning.
• Heat Energy vs Mechanical Energy in Heat Engines
Thermodynamic principles, conversion cycles, and real-life examples (e.g., IC engines, steam turbines).
• Nuclear Fusion Process
Fusion of hydrogen isotopes into helium along with energy release; illustrated through nuclear reaction diagrams.
• Metal–Semiconductor Junctions in Solar Cells
Role of Schottky and PN junctions in charge separation, efficiency, and electrical output.
• Fluid Dynamics & Wind Power
Principles such as Bernoulli’s theorem, drag, lift, turbine design, placement of wind farms, and power curves.
• Using Energy Audits in Industries
How audit findings improve conservation, reduce cost, enhance compliance, and optimize energy performance.
This section focuses on application and scientific reasoning.
SECTION C – Long Analytical & Design-Based Questions (21 Marks)
Students must attempt one question from each subsection. These questions require synthesis, diagrammatic explanation, and scenario-based analysis.
C1: Heat Engines & Cooling Systems
Option A – Stirling & Carnot Engine Working
Explaining thermodynamic cycles, PV diagrams, efficiency limits, and heat transfer stages.
Option B – Refrigeration vs Heat Pump
Comparison of working principles, COP, and thermodynamic processes such as compression and expansion.
C2: Nuclear Science
Option A – Nuclear Chain Reaction
Principles behind fission, neutron moderation, and the role of control rods in maintaining criticality.
Option B – Nuclear Fuel Cycle
Covers mining, enrichment, reactor operation, reprocessing, and radioactive waste disposal.
C3: Solar Energy Systems
Option A – First vs Second Generation Solar Cells
Performance comparison including cost, efficiency, materials (silicon vs thin films), and applications.
Option B – Simple Solar Energy System Diagram
Solar panel → Charge controller/inverter → Battery → Load
Explaining the function of each component.
C4: Bioenergy & Ocean Energy
Option A – Conversion of Organic Matter into Energy
Biofuel production, anaerobic digestion (biogas), biomass combustion, and biochemical pathways.
Option B – Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC)
Diagram of warm-surface and cold-deep-water cycle, heat exchangers, turbine operation, and industrial applications.
C5: Green Energy & Sustainability
Option A – Feasibility of Converting Existing Building into Green Building
Assessment of financial, environmental, and technical challenges.
Option B – Reducing Carbon Footprint of a Small City
Covers conservation practices, renewable energy adoption, waste management, sustainable transport, etc.
Overall Purpose of the Examination
The BOE304 exam prepares students to:
