(SEM VI) THEORY EXAMINATION 2022-23 POWER ELECTRONICS
POWER ELECTRONICS (KEE-603) – COMPLETE EXAM-READY EXPLANATION
(B.Tech Semester VI – Theory Examination 2022–23)
POWER-ELECTRONICS-KEE-603
Power Electronics is a core electrical engineering subject that deals with the conversion, control, and conditioning of electrical power using power semiconductor devices. The objective of this subject is to understand how electrical energy can be efficiently converted from one form to another, such as AC to DC, DC to AC, DC to DC, and AC to AC, using controlled switching techniques. The question paper is designed to test both conceptual understanding of power semiconductor devices and analytical ability in converter and inverter circuits. Writing answers in a clear, descriptive, and logically flowing manner is essential to score well.
SECTION A – FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS OF POWER ELECTRONICS
Section A focuses on testing the student’s understanding of basic terminology, working principles, and comparative concepts. Even though the questions carry fewer marks, they are conceptually very important.
For example, when explaining the advantages of power electronic converters, the answer should clearly describe how these converters offer high efficiency, fast response, compact size, and improved control over power flow compared to conventional electromechanical systems. The explanation should highlight their importance in modern industrial and domestic applications.
The question on latching current and holding current in SCR requires a clear explanation of SCR turn-on and turn-off behavior. Students should explain that latching current is the minimum current required to keep the SCR in the ON state immediately after triggering, whereas holding current is the minimum anode current below which the SCR turns OFF.
Questions related to TRIAC working, power BJT characteristics, freewheeling diode, PWM technique, and AC voltage controllers test understanding of device operation and waveform control. These answers should explain how current flows, how switching is achieved, and how performance such as power factor and output voltage is improved.
Comparative questions such as voltage source inverter versus current source inverter and circulating versus non-circulating current mode in dual converters must be written by explaining operating principles, advantages, limitations, and application differences, rather than just listing features.
SECTION B – POWER SEMICONDUCTOR DEVICES AND CONVERTERS
Section B requires detailed explanation with circuit operation and analysis. Answers here should be written as structured explanations that guide the examiner through the working of the circuit.
The question on static V-I characteristics of thyristor and MOSFET should explain the different operating regions and how voltage and current behave during ON and OFF states. Even when diagrams are required, a clear verbal explanation is mandatory.
The series-parallel combination of thyristors numerical problem tests the understanding of voltage and current sharing. Students must explain why series and parallel combinations are needed, apply derating factors correctly, and show calculation steps logically.
The single-phase fully controlled bridge converter is one of the most important topics. Students must clearly explain rectifying mode and inversion mode, describing how firing angle controls output voltage and power flow. Explaining the change in direction of power flow strengthens the answer.
Cycloconverters and current source inverters are advanced topics. Here, students should explain frequency conversion, step-up and step-down operation, and waveform characteristics in a continuous narrative manner, supported by explanation of switching sequence.
SECTION C – ADVANCED CONTROL, COMMUTATION & INVERTERS
Section C focuses on analytical depth and application-based understanding. Answers must be long, logically structured, and supported by reasoning.
The question on IGBT and MOSFET specifications and applications expects a comparative explanation highlighting switching speed, voltage rating, efficiency, and industrial usage. Students should explain why MOSFETs are preferred at high frequency and why IGBTs are used in high power applications.
The numerical problem on gate pulse width required to turn ON an SCR tests understanding of transient current growth in RL circuits. Students must explain current buildup in inductive loads and derive the required pulse width logically.
Commutation techniques are extremely important. Students should explain why commutation is required in SCRs and then describe techniques such as natural commutation and forced commutation with circuit behavior and waveforms.
The dual converter, semi-controlled bridge converter with RLE load, and AC voltage controller with RL load questions require explanation of phase control, conduction intervals, freewheeling action, and waveform behavior. These answers must clearly explain how output voltage and current are affected by firing angle and load nature.
Finally, inverter-related questions such as full bridge voltage source inverter and methods of voltage control test understanding of switching strategies, output waveform control, and practical inverter operation.
HOW TO WRITE POWER ELECTRONICS ANSWERS IN THE EXAM
In Power Electronics, never write answers in short bullet points. Always begin with a brief introduction of the concept, followed by a clear explanation of circuit operation, and then discuss its significance or application. Even for numerical problems, write the theory behind the formula before applying it. Proper explanation of waveforms and switching sequence is essential for full marks.
