SECTION A – Basic Concepts & Definitions

Section A checks whether you understand basic sociological terms and ideas. Answers should be short, clear, and factual. Writing unnecessary details here can waste time.

Definition of Sociology:
Sociology is the scientific study of society, social relationships, social institutions, and patterns of human interaction. It helps us understand how individuals behave within a group or society.
Characteristics of Industrial Revolution:
The industrial revolution introduced machine-based production, factory systems, mass production, urbanization, and a shift from agrarian to industrial economy.
Industrial Revolution (Definition):
Industrial revolution refers to the rapid transformation from manual and home-based production to machine-based factory production, which started in Europe during the 18th century.
Artisans:
Artisans are skilled workers who produce goods by hand, often using traditional tools. Before industrialization, artisans played a major role in production.
Theory of Class Struggle:
Proposed by Karl Marx, this theory states that society is divided into classes based on ownership of resources, and conflict between these classes drives social change.
De-industrialization:
De-industrialization refers to the decline of traditional industries, especially handicrafts, due to colonial policies and industrial expansion.
Navratna Companies:
Navratna companies are selected public sector enterprises in India given greater financial and operational autonomy.

Explanation of Important Topics
Social Relations in Industrial Sociology
Industrial sociology studies relationships between workers, employers, management, trade unions, and the state. It examines cooperation, conflict, authority, leadership, and communication within industrial organizations.
Guild System
The guild system existed in medieval Europe and India. Guilds were associations of craftsmen controlling training, quality, pricing, and working conditions. Though protective, guilds restricted innovation and competition.
Industrialization and Decline of Caste System
Industrialization reduced caste rigidity by promoting skill-based employment, urban migration, and factory work where caste identity mattered less than productivity.
Industrial Policy 1991 (Liberalisation & Privatisation)
The 1991 industrial policy opened India’s economy by reducing government control, encouraging private sector participation, foreign investment, and market competition.
Indian Labour Conference (ILC)
ILC is a tripartite body involving government, employers, and workers. It discusses labour laws, wages, working conditions, and industrial harmony.

Karl Marx believed that economic structure determines social structure. His ideology focused on class struggle, surplus value, capitalism, socialism, and communism.

Feudalism was a social and economic system where land was owned by lords and worked by peasants in exchange for protection. It restricted social mobility and economic growth.
Economic Effects of Industrial Revolution
The industrial revolution increased production, employment, urban growth, capital formation, but also led to exploitation, unemployment of artisans, and income inequality.

Impact of Industrialization on Family
Industrialization changed joint families into nuclear families, reduced family control, increased women employment, and weakened traditional values.
