(SEM VI) THEORY EXAMINATION 2017-18 PRINCIPLE OF TOWN PLANNING AND ARCHITECTURE
Principle of Town Planning and Architecture (NCE-014)
Complete Section-Wise Explanation – B.Tech Semester VI
Introduction to the Subject
Principle of Town Planning and Architecture deals with the systematic planning of towns, cities, and buildings to ensure healthy living conditions, efficient land use, aesthetic value, and sustainable development. The subject combines architecture, urban planning, sociology, environment, and aesthetics, making it very important for civil engineers and planners.
This subject helps students understand: Basic concepts of town planning
Land use planning and development plans Architectural principles and aesthetics
Environmental considerations Building bye-laws and regulations
Urban problems and planning solutions
The question paper is divided into three sections: A, B, and C, and students must attempt them as instructed.
SECTION A – Short Answer Questions
(2 × 10 = 20 marks)
Section A checks your basic understanding of definitions and core concepts. Answers should be short, clear, and to the point.
Explanation of Section A Questions
Contrast in Architecture
Contrast refers to the deliberate use of opposing elements such as light and dark, rough and smooth, or large and small forms to create visual interest and emphasis in architectural design.
Density Concept in Architecture
Density refers to the number of people or buildings accommodated per unit area of land. It is an important planning parameter that affects housing type, infrastructure demand, and quality of living.
Town Planning
Town planning is the art and science of organizing land use and buildings in a town to ensure orderly development, public health, convenience, and aesthetic appeal.
Population Survey
Population survey studies aspects like population size, growth rate, age distribution, literacy, occupation, and migration, which help planners estimate future requirements.
Land Use Categories
Land uses include residential, commercial, industrial, public and semi-public, recreational, transportation, and agricultural uses.
Garden City Movement
The Garden City Movement aimed to create self-contained towns surrounded by green belts, combining the benefits of urban and rural life.
Importance of Architectural Forms
Architectural forms provide functional efficiency and visual character to buildings, influencing usability and aesthetic value.
Environmental Pollution Causes
Common causes include industrial emissions, vehicular pollution, improper waste disposal, and deforestation.
Prevention of Environmental Pollution
Pollution can be reduced by proper waste management, use of clean energy, afforestation, and strict environmental regulations.
SECTION B – Descriptive Theory Questions
(Attempt any three, 10 × 3 = 30 marks)
Section B tests your conceptual understanding and ability to explain planning and architectural theories in detail. Answers should be written in paragraph form, supported by examples.
Theory of Three Magnets & Role of Town Planners
The theory of three magnets explains the attraction between people, places, and work, emphasizing that balanced planning is needed to prevent overcrowding and congestion.
Town planners play a vital role in national growth by guiding land use, infrastructure development, housing, transportation, and environmental protection, ensuring sustainable urban growth.
Built-Up Area, FSI, Plinth Area & Carpet Area
Built-up area includes the total covered area of a building. Floor Space Index (FSI) is the ratio of total built-up area to plot area and controls development density.
Plinth area is the covered area measured at floor level, while carpet area is the net usable area inside rooms, excluding walls and circulation spaces.
Development Through Ages & Factors Influencing Architecture
Architecture has evolved from primitive shelters to modern skyscrapers. Each era reflects available materials, technology, climate, culture, and social needs.
Factors influencing architecture include climate, materials, economy, religion, culture, technology, and environmental considerations.
Importance of Land Use Pattern in Development Plan
Land use planning ensures proper allocation of land for different activities, preventing conflicts and promoting efficient growth. A balanced land use pattern improves accessibility, reduces travel time, and enhances quality of life.
Principles of Architectural Design
Architectural design principles include balance, proportion, rhythm, unity, contrast, scale, and harmony. These principles ensure buildings are functional, aesthetically pleasing, and structurally sound.
SECTION C – Long Answer Questions
(5 × 10 = 50 marks)
Section C carries the highest weightage and requires well-structured, detailed explanations.
Question 3
Concept of Habitat
Habitat refers to the living environment of people, including housing, infrastructure, social facilities, and surroundings. Good habitat planning ensures comfort, safety, and sustainability.
Linear City Concept
The linear city concept proposes city development along transport corridors, allowing uniform growth, reduced congestion, and better accessibility.
OR
Elements of Aesthetics
Aesthetics in architecture deals with visual beauty. Elements include form, colour, texture, proportion, scale, and rhythm.
Texture affects surface appearance, while colour influences mood, perception, and visual harmony.
Question 4
Building Bye-Laws for Residential Areas
Building bye-laws regulate building height, setbacks, coverage, ventilation, lighting, and safety to ensure
healthy living conditions.
At least five bye-laws include plot coverage limits, minimum open spaces, building height restrictions, FAR/FSI limits, and ventilation requirements.
OR
Evolution of Architectural Forms
Architectural forms evolved from traditional styles to modern and contemporary designs due to changes in technology, materials, and social needs. Each phase reflects the lifestyle and aspirations of its time.
Question 5
Role of Materials in Architecture
Materials like stone, brick, concrete, steel, glass, and timber play a crucial role in architecture. Each material offers specific advantages such as strength, durability, aesthetics, and cost efficiency.
OR
Licensing of Building Works & Ventilation
Licensing of building works ensures construction complies with approved plans and regulations.
Proper ventilation allows fresh air circulation, removes heat and pollutants, and maintains indoor comfort.
Question 6
Neighborhood Planning in Indian Cities
Neighborhood planning focuses on self-contained residential units with schools, parks, shops, and community facilities within walking distance, promoting social interaction and safety.
OR
Garden City Concept
The Garden City concept proposed planned towns with green belts, low density, and balanced land use. It significantly influenced early urban planning practices.
Question 7
Problems in Metropolis & Remedies
Metropolitan cities face problems like congestion, pollution, housing shortage, traffic, and slums. Remedies include planned expansion, mass transit systems, affordable housing, and environmental management.
OR
Planning of Residential Complexes
Residential complex planning considers site selection, orientation, open spaces, circulation, parking, services, safety, and environmental comfort to ensure livable urban housing.
