(SEM IV) THEORY EXAMINATION 2023-24 OPERATING SYSTEM

Challenges in achieving mutual exclusion in concurrency
Structure & contents of a Process Control Block (PCB)
Fixed vs. variable partition multiprogramming
Comparison of storage technologies (HDD vs SSD)
This section focuses on system design reasoning, memory management approaches, and concurrency-related principles.
SECTION C – Advanced Analytical Questions (28 Marks)
This section contains five main questions, each offering two sub-parts, and the student must attempt one from each.
These questions cover:
1. OS Types & Architectures
Difference between multiuser and multiprocessing systems
Layered architecture of operating systems
2. Concurrency, Deadlock & Mutual Exclusion
Causes, prevention, and avoidance of deadlocks
Comparison of Dekker's & Peterson’s algorithms
3. Deep Analysis of Deadlock Techniques
Prevention, avoidance, detection, and recovery
System model & conditions for deadlock occurrence
4. Memory Management
Principles of paging & segmentation
Virtual memory, page tables, address translation, and demand paging
5. File System Organization
File allocation methods: contiguous, linked, indexed
Management of directory structures: hierarchical vs. flat
This section evaluates high-level understanding of modern OS design, memory mechanisms, resource allocation, and file system internals.
