(SEM I) THEORY EXAMINATION 2020-21 ENGINEERING CHEMISTRY
This document contains the official AKTU B.Tech 1st Semester (2020–21) Theory Examination question paper for Engineering Chemistry (KAS102T). It is a full 100-mark, 3-hour exam paper and follows the complete AKTU pattern with Section A, Section B, and Section C. This question paper is essential for students preparing for end-semester exams, internal tests, or quick revision of key chemistry concepts relevant to engineering applications.
Engineering Chemistry plays a vital role in helping first-year students build a strong foundation in chemical bonding, spectroscopy, water treatment, fuel analysis, polymer science, material chemistry, thermodynamics, phase rule, and Grignard reactions. This paper covers both theoretical and numerical concepts commonly asked in the AKTU examination.
Detailed Breakdown of the Question Paper
SECTION A – 10 Short Questions (20 Marks)
This section contains 10 very short questions, each worth 2 marks. Topics include:
Impurity defects in solids
Chemical resistance of Teflon
Selection rule
IR spectra: Intermolecular vs intramolecular H-bonding
Phase, components, and degree of freedom (Gibbs Phase Rule)
Calgon process for water treatment
Preparation of Grignard reagent
Paramagnetism of O₂ and diamagnetism of N₂
Estimation of sulfur by ultimate analysis
Rust yield from iron
These questions help with quick revision before exams.
SECTION B – 3 Long Questions (30 Marks)
Students must attempt any 3 out of 5 questions. These include:
Metallic bonding using Molecular Orbital Theory
Criteria for Raman/IR/Rotational/UV spectra
Vibrational degrees of freedom of CO₂, H₂O, C₂H₂
Coal analysis: air required, GCV & NCV (Dulong’s formula)
Nernst equation + EMF calculation of electrochemical cell
Addition vs condensation polymerization + monomers & applications of PMMA, PE, Bakelite, PVC, Nylon-6,6, Buna-S
This section strengthens conceptual understanding and numerical problem-solving skills.
SECTION C – 5 Long Answer Questions (50 Marks)
Students must attempt one part from each question. Each question carries 10 marks and includes detailed concepts:
Question 3 — Solid State & Bond Order
Non-stoichiometric defects
Bond order, magnetic behavior, stability of NO, NO⁻, NO⁺
Question 4 — Thermodynamics & Phase Rule
Calculation of ΔH, ΔG, ΔS
OR
Water phase diagram, triple point & metastable state
Question 5 — Molecular Spectroscopy
Chromophores, auxochromes, UV transitions
OR
Microwave spectra of diatomic molecules + applications
Question 6 — Fuel Chemistry & Water Softening
Bomb calorimeter + proximate analysis of coal
OR
Ion exchange water softening + hardness calculation
Question 7 — Grignard Reagent & Composites
Preparation of acids, ketones, alcohols, alkanes, organometallic compounds from Grignard reagent
OR
Composite materials + classifications
This section tests deep understanding, derivations, numerical reasoning, and chemical applications.
