(SEM-I) THEORY EXAMINATION 2019-20 BASIC ELECTRICAL ENGG.
B.Tech 1st Semester question paper for Basic Electrical Engineering (KEE101). It is structured as a complete 100-mark, 3-hour examination, following the exact pattern used by AKTU: Section A, Section B, and Section C.
This question paper tests a student’s foundation in DC circuits, AC circuits, magnetic circuits, transformers, DC machines, 3-phase systems, batteries, electrical safety, and induction motors.
It is extremely useful for first-year engineering students preparing for semester exams, internal assessments, and practical viva, as it includes both numerical and theoretical questions covering every important chapter from the KEE101 syllabus.
Detailed Breakdown of the Question Paper
SECTION A – Short Answer Questions (10 × 2 = 20 Marks)
This section contains 10 very short questions to quickly test conceptual understanding. Topics include:
Unilateral vs bilateral elements
Superposition theorem
Form factor of AC current
Dynamic impedance
MMF & reluctance relationship
Voltage regulation of transformer
Role of commutator
Synchronous speed formula (f & P)
Full forms: MCB, MCCB, ELCB, SFU
Factors affecting battery capacity
These questions help students revise definitions and fundamental concepts.
SECTION B – Medium-Length Questions (3 × 10 = 30 Marks)
Attempt any three. This section includes both numericals and conceptual explanations:
Thevenin's theorem–based current calculation
Instantaneous voltage sum & difference derivation
Classification of magnetic materials
Torque expression of DC motor + applications
Ampere-hour & watt-hour efficiency of battery charging/discharging
These questions strengthen students’ skills in circuit analysis, electric machines, and energy systems.
SECTION C – Long, High-Weightage Questions (5 × 10 = 50 Marks)
Each question has two parts; attempt one part from each.
Q3 – Network Theorems / Star-Delta
Superposition theorem to find current in 2Ω
OR
Star–Delta & Delta–Star transformation derivation + conditions
Q4 – AC Circuits & Resonance
Resonant frequency derivation for series RLC
OR
Bandwidth, half-power frequencies, quality factor (Q)
Q5 – 3-Phase Systems
Relationship between line & phase voltage/current in star connection
OR
Delta load calculation (line current, pf, power for a (12+j9)Ω load)
Q6 – Transformers / Machines
No-load and full-load phasor diagram of single-phase transformer
OR
Auto-transformer + transformer efficiency at full & half load
Q7 – Induction Motors / Earthing
Difference between neutral and earthing
OR
Starting methods of single-phase induction motors + Why synchronous motor is not self-starting
These questions prepare students for long derivations, phasor diagrams, and machine characteristics.
Why This Question Set Is Valuable for Students
