Vehicle body design ensures safety, comfort, aerodynamics, aesthetics, and structural strength. A well-designed body improves fuel efficiency and passenger protection.
b) Percentage composition of carbon in steel
Low carbon steel: 0.05% – 0.30%
Medium carbon steel: 0.30% – 0.60%
High carbon steel: 0.60% – 1.50%
c) Ground clearance
Ground clearance is the minimum vertical distance between the lowest part of the vehicle body and the ground.
d) Advantages of front engine front wheel drive (FE-FWD)
Better traction on slippery roads
More interior space
Reduced vehicle weight
Improved fuel efficiency
e) Resistances faced by a moving vehicle
Rolling resistance
Air resistance
Gradient resistance
Inertia resistance
f) Metal matrix composites (MMC)
MMCs consist of a metal matrix reinforced with fibers or particles to improve strength.
Examples:
Aluminium-silicon carbide
Magnesium-aluminium oxide
g) Importance of downward visibility
Downward visibility helps the driver detect obstacles near the vehicle, improving safety during parking and maneuvering.
h) Ergonomics in vehicle body
Ergonomics refers to designing vehicle interiors for driver comfort, safety, and reduced fatigue, considering human anatomy.
i) Crash worthiness
Crash worthiness is the ability of a vehicle body to protect occupants during an accident by absorbing impact energy.
j) Stationary and mobile sources of noise
Stationary: Factories, generators
Mobile: Vehicles, aircraft, trains
SECTION B – Long Answer Type
(Attempt any three – 10 Marks each)
2(a) Categorization of vehicle body parts (Application & Shape)
Vehicle body parts are categorized based on function and structural role.
By Application: Load-carrying parts (chassis, frame)
Enclosure parts (roof, doors, panels) Safety parts (bumpers, crumple zones)
Comfort parts (seats, dashboards)
By Shape: Flat panels (floor, roof)
Curved panels (fenders, doors) Box sections (pillars, frames)
This classification helps in material selection and manufacturing processes.
2(b) Corrosion and its prevention techniques
Corrosion
Corrosion is the gradual deterioration of metal due to chemical or electrochemical reactions with the environment.
Prevention techniques:
Painting and coating – isolates metal from air and moisture
Galvanization – zinc coating prevents rust
Cathodic protection – uses sacrificial anodes
Use of corrosion-resistant materials
Sealants and wax coating
These techniques extend vehicle life and appearance.
2(c) Forces and moments acting on a vehicle
Forces: Tractive force
Aerodynamic drag Rolling resistance
Braking force
Moments: Pitching moment
Rolling moment Yawing moment
These forces and moments influence stability, handling, and safety of the vehicle during motion.
2(d) Points to be considered while designing a driver’s seat
Proper lumbar support Adjustable seat height and angle
Cushion comfort Adequate thigh support
Easy reach to pedals and steering Vibration isolation
Good seat design improves driver comfort and reduces fatigue.
2(e) Short notes
i) Anti-corrosion material
Includes stainless steel, aluminium alloys, coated steels, and composite materials.
ii) Ergonomics
Focuses on human-centered vehicle design for comfort and safety.
iii) Corrosion
Metal degradation due to environmental exposure.
iv) Noise suppression methods
Sound insulation Damping materials
Mufflers Acoustic panels
SECTION C – Descriptive Answer Type
3(a) Classification of passenger cars and bus bodies
Passenger cars: Hatchback
Sedan SUV
Coupe Convertible
Bus bodies: Single-deck bus
Double-deck bus Mini bus
Coach
Each classification differs in capacity, structure, and application.
3(b) Angle of approach, departure & ground clearance
Angle of Approach: Maximum angle a vehicle can climb without front damage
Angle of Departure: Maximum angle vehicle can descend without rear damage
Ground Clearance: Distance between lowest body part and ground
These parameters affect off-road capability.
4(a) Properties and usage of body materials
| Material | Properties | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| Steel | Strong, economical | Chassis, panels |
| Aluminium | Light, corrosion-resistant | Doors, hoods |
| Plastics | Lightweight | Bumpers |
| Composites | High strength-to-weight | Sports vehicles |
4(b) Short notes
i) Paint
Protects body from corrosion and improves appearance.
ii) Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP)
Lightweight, corrosion-resistant composite used in panels.
iii) Composite
Combination of materials for improved mechanical properties.
5(a) Body optimization techniques for minimum drag
Streamlined body shape Rounded edges
Smooth underbody Rear spoilers
Reduced frontal area Lower drag coefficient improves fuel efficiency.
5(b) Wind tunnel concept
Wind tunnels simulate airflow around vehicles to: Measure drag
Study lift Improve aerodynamics
Flow visualization uses smoke, tufts, or dyes to observe airflow patterns.
6(a) Factors for driver seating position
Visibility Steering reach
Pedal access Comfort
Safety
Proper seating ensures control and reduced fatigue.
6(b) Steering wheel impact reduction techniques
Collapsible steering column Energy-absorbing materials
