SECTION A
(Attempt all questions in brief – 2 × 10 = 20 marks)
a. Define plant-based biomass.
Plant-based biomass refers to organic material obtained from plants such as crops, agricultural residues, wood, grasses, and energy crops, which can be used as a renewable source of energy and raw materials.
b. Define “diversity of biomass”.
Diversity of biomass refers to the wide variety of biological materials available from different sources such as plants, animals, and microorganisms, differing in composition, structure, and energy potential.
c. Define analog filters.
Analog filters are electronic circuits that process continuous-time signals and allow certain frequency ranges to pass while attenuating others, using components like resistors, capacitors, and op-amps.
d. Write use of Op-amp resistor circuits.
Op-amp resistor circuits are used for amplification, signal conditioning, filtering, summing, integration, differentiation, and voltage buffering in electronic systems.
e. Define aquatic biomass.
Aquatic biomass consists of biological materials derived from water-based sources such as algae, seaweed, aquatic plants, and microorganisms grown in freshwater or marine environments.
f. Define biomass energy.
Biomass energy is renewable energy produced from organic materials such as plant and animal waste through processes like combustion, fermentation, and anaerobic digestion.
g. Define alcohol fuels.
Alcohol fuels are liquid biofuels produced from biomass through fermentation processes, mainly ethanol and methanol, used as alternative or blended fuels in engines.
h. How are landfill gases used?
Landfill gases, mainly methane and carbon dioxide, are captured and used for electricity generation, heating, or as vehicle fuel, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
i. Define anaerobic digestion as a source of energy.
Anaerobic digestion is a biological process in which microorganisms break down organic matter in the absence of oxygen to produce biogas, which is used as a renewable energy source.
j. Give some examples of liquid biofuels.
Examples of liquid biofuels include bioethanol, biodiesel, bio-methanol, and bio-butanol.
SECTION B
(Attempt any three – answers provided for ALL)
2(a). Describe circuit simulated modeling.
Circuit simulated modeling is the process of analyzing and predicting the behavior of electronic circuits using computer-based simulation tools such as SPICE or MATLAB. It allows designers to test circuit performance, frequency response, stability, and efficiency without physically building the circuit. Simulation helps reduce cost, design errors, and development time.
2(b). Describe bio-based economy.
A bio-based economy is an economic system that uses renewable biological resources such as crops, forests, algae, and waste to produce food, energy, chemicals, and materials. It promotes sustainability, reduces dependence on fossil fuels, lowers carbon emissions, and supports rural development through renewable resource utilization.
2(c). Write an ideal bio-economy cycle of any developed country.
An ideal bio-economy cycle includes biomass production (agriculture and forestry), processing into biofuels and bioproducts, consumption in industries and households, recycling of waste, and regeneration of resources. Countries like Germany and Sweden integrate waste recycling, renewable energy, and bio-based industries to achieve sustainability.
2(d). Write the recycling process of plant-based biomass.
The recycling process of plant-based biomass includes collection of agricultural residues, preprocessing (drying and shredding), conversion through composting, fermentation, or anaerobic digestion, and utilization of outputs such as biogas, biofertilizers, and biofuels.
2(e). Write the principle and working of analog filters.
Analog filters work on the principle of frequency-dependent impedance of circuit components. Using resistors, capacitors, and op-amps, filters allow desired frequencies to pass and attenuate unwanted frequencies. Common types include low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, and band-stop filters.
SECTION C
3(a). Write the principle and applications of Op-amp models.
Principle:
Op-amp models operate on the principle of high gain differential amplification, where the output is proportional to the difference between input voltages.
Applications: Signal amplification
Active filters Oscillators
Voltage regulators Instrumentation systems
3(b). Enumerate various types of filters. Describe any one.
Types of filters: Low-pass filter
High-pass filter Band-pass filter
Band-stop filter
Low-pass filter:
It allows low-frequency signals to pass while attenuating high-frequency signals. It is widely used in audio systems and signal conditioning.
4(a). Enumerate various tools to support the transition to a bio-economy.
Tools include government policies, subsidies, R&D funding, life-cycle assessment, biorefinery technologies, education and training programs, and international collaboration to promote sustainable bio-based industries.
4(b). Write the role of Government in environmental economics.
The government regulates environmental protection through laws, pollution control policies, carbon pricing, subsidies for renewable energy, environmental taxes, and awareness programs to ensure sustainable economic development.
5(a). Write the concept of biorefineries.
Biorefineries are industrial facilities that convert biomass into multiple products such as biofuels, chemicals, electricity, and heat, similar to petroleum refineries but using renewable resources.
5(b). Describe resource competition, complementarities, and food security.
Resource competition occurs when land, water, or crops are used for both food and biofuel production. Complementarities arise when waste biomass is used without affecting food supply. Sustainable planning ensures food security while promoting bioenergy.
6(a). Explain bio-based resources and value chain.
Bio-based resources include agricultural crops, forests, algae, and organic waste. The value chain covers biomass production, processing, conversion, distribution, and final consumption of bio-products.
6(b). Describe the use of biomass for the production of fuel and chemicals.
Biomass is converted into fuels like bioethanol, biodiesel, and biogas through fermentation, transesterification, and digestion. It also produces chemicals such as bioplastics, organic acids, and solvents.
7(a). Describe dynamic management of fossil fuel.
Dynamic management of fossil fuels involves efficient utilization, conservation strategies, gradual substitution with renewable energy, pricing policies, and technological innovation to reduce dependency and environmental impact.
7(b). Enumerate various biofuels. How can their production be increased?
Biofuels: Bioethanol, biodiesel, biogas, bio-methanol, bio-butanol.
Increasing production: Improved crop yield, advanced conversion technologies, use of waste biomass, supportive policies, and investment in research.
