(SEM VII) THEORY EXAMINATION 2022-23 BIOECONOMICS
BIOECONOMICS (KOE-072)
B.Tech SEM VII – Complete Solved Question Paper (2022–23)
SECTION A
Attempt all questions in brief (2 × 10 = 20 Marks)
(a) What are filters?
Filters are electronic circuits that allow certain frequency components of a signal to pass while attenuating others. They are used to remove noise or unwanted frequencies from signals.
(b) What do you mean by bioeconomics?
Bioeconomics is an interdisciplinary field that combines biology and economics to study the sustainable production, use, and management of biological resources for economic growth and environmental protection.
(c) Define entrepreneurship.
Entrepreneurship is the process of identifying opportunities, taking risks, and creating innovative products or services to generate economic value and employment.
(d) What is fossil fuel?
Fossil fuels are non-renewable energy resources such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas formed from the remains of ancient plants and animals over millions of years.
(e) Explain the term biofuel.
Biofuel is a renewable fuel produced from biological materials such as plants, agricultural waste, or algae. Examples include ethanol, biodiesel, and biogas.
(f) What is biotechnology?
Biotechnology is the application of biological systems, organisms, or processes to develop products and technologies for human welfare, such as medicines, biofuels, and improved crops.
(g) Explain sustainable development.
Sustainable development refers to development that meets present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, balancing economic growth, environmental protection, and social well-being.
(h) What do you mean by innovation?
Innovation is the introduction of new ideas, technologies, processes, or products that create value and improve efficiency, sustainability, or quality of life.
(i) What do you mean by primary production?
Primary production is the generation of biomass from natural resources such as agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and aquaculture, forming the base of the bioeconomy value chain.
(j) What is transdisciplinarity?
Transdisciplinarity is an approach that integrates knowledge from multiple disciplines and stakeholders to solve complex real-world problems such as sustainability and climate change.
SECTION B
Attempt any THREE (10 × 3 = 30 Marks)
(a) Explain descriptive terminology of filter. Why do we use analog filters, circuit elements & scaling?
Filters are classified based on frequency response such as low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, and band-stop filters. Analog filters use components like resistors, capacitors, inductors, and operational amplifiers. Circuit element selection and scaling are required to achieve desired frequency characteristics, stability, and practical component values.
(b) Explain inter- and transdisciplinarity in bioeconomy and research approaches.
Interdisciplinarity combines knowledge from different disciplines such as biology, economics, engineering, and environmental science to address bioeconomic challenges. Transdisciplinarity goes further by involving policymakers, industry, and society to develop sustainable and practical solutions for bio-based development.
(c) Explain food security and healthy nutrition in the context of bioeconomy.
The bioeconomy supports food security by promoting sustainable agriculture, efficient use of biomass, and reduced dependency on fossil resources. It ensures healthy nutrition by encouraging bio-based food production, innovation in food processing, and improved supply chains.
(d) Advantages of biobased products over fossil-based products. Are they more sustainable?
Biobased products are renewable, biodegradable, and emit lower greenhouse gases. They reduce dependence on fossil fuels and promote circular economy practices. Their production processes are generally more sustainable when supported by responsible resource management and clean technologies.
(e) Economic growth, development, and innovation in bioeconomy.
Economic growth refers to increased production and income. Development includes improvements in living standards and sustainability. Innovation in the bioeconomy drives new technologies, bio-products, and business models that support green growth and environmental protection.
SECTION C
Q3
(a) Operational amplifiers with resistive feedback: Inverting and Non-inverting
An operational amplifier (op-amp) is a high-gain amplifier used in analog circuits.
Inverting amplifier: Output is 180° out of phase with input. Gain depends on resistor ratio.
Non-inverting amplifier: Output is in phase with input and provides high input impedance.
( In exam, draw neat circuit diagrams)
(b) Circuit simulation and modeling. Applications of op-amp resistor circuits
Circuit simulation uses software tools to analyze and test circuit behavior before implementation. Op-amp resistor circuits are used in amplifiers, filters, voltage regulators, and signal conditioning systems.
Q4
(a) Role of bio-based economy in sustainable development
The bio-based economy supports sustainable development by using renewable biological resources, reducing carbon emissions, promoting green industries, and supporting rural development and employment.
(b) Primary production, processing of biobased resources, and entrepreneurship
Primary production supplies raw biomass. Processing converts biomass into value-added products like biofuels and biochemicals. Entrepreneurship plays a key role by transforming innovations into commercial bio-based products.
Q5
(a) Inter- and transdisciplinarity in bioeconomy and research approaches
Interdisciplinary research integrates scientific fields, while transdisciplinary research includes social, economic, and policy perspectives. Both approaches are essential for addressing complex bioeconomic challenges.
(b) Environmental economics and role of government
Environmental economics studies the economic impact of environmental policies. Governments regulate resource use, provide incentives for green technologies, impose pollution taxes, and support sustainable development initiatives.
Q6
(a) Markets, sustainability management, and entrepreneurship opportunities in biobased products
Biobased markets focus on sustainable products. Sustainability management ensures responsible resource use, while entrepreneurship creates business opportunities in biofuels, bioplastics, and green chemicals.
(b) Sustainable and innovative use of biomass and biological knowledge
Biomass is used to produce food, animal feed, fuels, and industrial products. Innovations in biotechnology and bio-processing improve efficiency and sustainability.
Q7
(a) Importance of biotechnology for bioeconomy
Biotechnology enables efficient conversion of biomass into valuable products, improves crop yield, develops biofuels, and supports sustainable industrial processes.
(b) Biobased resources and value chains. Use of biomass for fuel and chemicals
Biobased resources include crops, forests, and waste biomass. The value chain covers production, processing, conversion, and distribution. Biomass is used to produce ethanol, biodiesel, biogas, and bio-chemicals.
