(SEM VII) THEORY EXAMINATION 2022-23 BIOECONOMICS
BIOECONOMICS (KOE-072)
B.Tech SEM VII – Complete Solved Question Paper (2022–23)
⏱ Time: 3 Hours | 📊 Marks: 100
SECTION A
Attempt all questions (2 × 10 = 20 marks)
(a) What are filters?
Filters are electronic circuits used to allow certain frequency components of a signal to pass while blocking or attenuating unwanted frequencies. They are widely used in signal processing and communication systems
(b) What do you mean by bioeconomics?
Bioeconomics is an interdisciplinary field that integrates biology, economics, and technology to promote sustainable use of biological resources for economic growth and environmental protection
(c) Define entrepreneurship.
Entrepreneurship is the process of identifying business opportunities, taking risks, innovating products or services, and organizing resources to create economic value and employment
(d) What is fossil fuel?
Fossil fuels are non-renewable energy resources such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas formed from ancient organic matter over millions of years
(e) Explain the term biofuel.
Biofuel is a renewable energy source produced from biological materials such as crops, agricultural waste, and algae. Examples include ethanol, biodiesel, and biogas
(f) What is biotechnology?
Biotechnology is the application of biological systems and organisms to develop useful products such as medicines, biofuels, improved crops, and industrial enzymes
(g) Explain sustainable development.
Sustainable development refers to development that meets present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, balancing economic, environmental, and social factors
(h) What do you mean by innovation?
Innovation is the introduction of new or improved products, processes, technologies, or business models that create value and improve efficiency or sustainability
(i) What do you mean by primary production?
Primary production is the production of biomass directly from natural resources such as agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and aquaculture, forming the base of the bioeconomy value chain
(j) What is transdisciplinarity?
Transdisciplinarity is an approach that integrates knowledge from different academic disciplines along with stakeholders such as industry, policymakers, and society to solve complex real-world problems
SECTION B
Attempt any THREE (10 × 3 = 30 marks)
(a) Descriptive terminology of filter. Why use analog filters, circuit elements & scaling?
Filter terminology includes passband, stopband, cutoff frequency, bandwidth, and attenuation. Analog filters are used because they provide real-time signal processing using resistors, capacitors, inductors, and operational amplifiers. Circuit elements and scaling are required to achieve desired frequency response and practical component values in real applications
(b) Inter- and transdisciplinarity in bioeconomy & research approaches
Interdisciplinarity combines biology, economics, engineering, and environmental sciences to address bioeconomic challenges. Transdisciplinarity goes further by involving industry, government, and society to develop sustainable and implementable bio-based solutions
(c) Food security and healthy nutrition in the context of bioeconomy
The bioeconomy supports food security by promoting sustainable agriculture, efficient biomass utilization, and reduced food waste. It ensures healthy nutrition through innovation in food processing, biofortification, and improved supply chains
(d) Advantages of biobased products over fossil-based products. Are they more sustainable?
Biobased products are renewable, biodegradable, and emit fewer greenhouse gases. They reduce dependence on fossil fuels and support a circular economy. Their production processes are generally more sustainable when managed responsibly and supported by clean technologies
(e) Economic growth, development, and innovation in bioeconomy
Economic growth refers to increased production and income. Development includes improvements in quality of life and sustainability. Innovation in the bioeconomy enables new bio-based products, technologies, and business models that promote green growth and environmental protection
SECTION C
Q3 (Attempt any one)
(a) Operational amplifiers with resistive feedback: Inverting and Non-inverting
An operational amplifier is a high-gain electronic amplifier.
• Inverting amplifier: Output is 180° out of phase with input; gain depends on resistor ratio.
• Non-inverting amplifier: Output is in phase with input and provides high input impedance.
( In exam, draw neat circuit diagrams)
(b) Circuit simulation & modeling. Applications of op-amp resistor circuits
Circuit simulation uses software tools to analyze circuit behavior before physical implementation. Op-amp resistor circuits are used in amplifiers, filters, voltage regulators, and signal conditioning applications
Q4 (Attempt any one)
(a) Role of bio-based economy in sustainable development
The bio-based economy promotes sustainable development by using renewable biological resources, reducing carbon emissions, encouraging green industries, and supporting rural development and employment
(b) Primary production, processing of biobased resources & entrepreneurship
Primary production supplies biomass. Processing converts biomass into biofuels, biochemicals, and biomaterials. Entrepreneurship plays a vital role in commercializing innovations and creating bio-based businesses
Q5 (Attempt any one)
(a) Inter- and transdisciplinarity in bioeconomy & research approaches
Interdisciplinary research integrates scientific fields, while transdisciplinary research includes social, economic, and policy dimensions. Both are essential for addressing sustainability challenges in the bioeconomy
(b) Environmental economics and role of government
Environmental economics studies the economic impact of environmental policies. Governments regulate pollution, promote green technologies, impose environmental taxes, and provide incentives for sustainable development
Q6 (Attempt any one)
(a) Markets, sustainability management, and entrepreneurship opportunity in biobased products
Biobased markets focus on sustainable goods. Sustainability management ensures efficient resource use, while entrepreneurship creates opportunities in biofuels, bioplastics, and green chemicals
(b) Sustainable and innovative use of biomass and biological knowledge
Biomass is used to produce food, animal feed, fuels, and industrial products. Innovations in biotechnology improve efficiency, reduce waste, and support sustainable production systems
Q7 (Attempt any one)
(a) Importance of biotechnology for bioeconomy
Biotechnology enables efficient biomass conversion, improved crop productivity, development of biofuels, and sustainable industrial processes, making it a backbone of the bioeconomy
(b) Biobased resources and value chains. Use of biomass for fuel and chemicals
Biobased resources include crops, forests, and waste biomass. The value chain includes production, processing, conversion, and distribution. Biomass is used to produce ethanol, biodiesel, biogas, and bio-chemicals
