(SEM I) THEORY EXAMINATION 2018-19 CHEMISTRY
This is the complete B.Tech 1st Semester Engineering Chemistry (KAS102) question paper designed according to the official 100-mark university pattern. The paper includes Section A (short questions), Section B (descriptive), and Section C (long answer questions), covering all major units of the Engineering Chemistry syllabus such as:
Spectroscopy (IR, Raman, UV-Vis)
Phase rule & water system
Organometallics & Grignard reagents
Fuel chemistry & calorific values
Coal analysis & thermodynamics
Water softening (Lime–Soda, Zeolite, RO method)
Nanotechnology
Polymer chemistry
Liquid crystals, Fullerenes & Molecular orbital theory
Electrochemical cells & Nernst equation
Corrosion & its prevention
This question paper is extremely useful for AKTU students preparing for semester exams, internal assessments, competitive exams, and last-minute revision.
SECTION A – Short Conceptual Questions (10 × 2 = 20 marks)
This part tests basic concepts from all chapters:
Molecules showing rotational spectra
Polarizability in Raman spectroscopy
Why GCV > NCV
Lime requirement for Mg(HCO₃)₂
Monomers of neoprene & terylene
Role of dry ether in Grignard reagent formation
Cell potential calculation using Nernst equation
Using aluminum instead of zinc for cathodic protection
Applications of nanotechnology
Bond length order of nitrogen species
These questions help with conceptual clarity and quick revision.
SECTION B – Descriptive Questions (Attempt Any 3 × 10 = 30 marks)
This section includes explanations, derivations, and numericals:
Fullerenes
Structure, preparation, properties, and applications of C₆₀.
Nernst Equation & Thermodynamic Parameters
Calculate ΔG, ΔS, ΔH using EMF of a given electrochemical cell.
IR Spectroscopy
Finger-print vs functional group region + structural assignment to two C₃H₆O isomers using peak positions (1650 cm⁻¹ & 1710 cm⁻¹).
Water Softening
Hardness of water, permutit/zeolite process, chemical reactions & working principle.
Grignard Reagent
Preparation methods + reactions with HCHO, R₂NH, CO₂, alcohol, and esters.
These questions strengthen theory-plus-numerical understanding.
SECTION C – Long Answer Questions (5 × 10 = 50 marks)
Attempt one part from each question.
