(SEM I) THEORY EXAMINATION 2017-18 BASIC ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
This is the complete AKTU B.Tech First Year – Basic Electrical Engineering (BEE / EEE) question paper designed as per the latest university pattern. The paper covers fundamentals of DC circuits, AC circuits, transformers, induction motors, DC machines, power measurement, magnetic circuits, and network analysis.
The question paper is divided into three structured sections – A, B, and C, consisting of short, medium, and long questions. It is perfect for preparing for semester exams, assignments, viva, and last-minute revision.
SECTION A – Short Answer Questions (7 × 2 = 14 Marks)
This section tests basic understanding of electrical engineering concepts:
Ideal current source vs practical voltage source
Total 3-phase power of a Y-connected balanced load
Active vs passive elements; bilateral vs unilateral elements
Why series resonant circuit acts as an acceptor circuit and parallel resonance as rejecter circuit
Why transformers cannot work on DC supply
Power factor of impedance (3 + j4) Ω
Slip and slip speed in induction motors
These questions help students revise key definitions and formulas quickly.
SECTION B – Descriptive Questions (Attempt Any 3 × 7 = 21 Marks)
Mesh Analysis
Calculate current through a given resistor using mesh equations.
AC Resonance
Derive bandwidth of a series RLC circuit and explain the relationship between Q-factor and bandwidth.
Two-Wattmeter Method
Derive the formula for 3-phase power using two wattmeters and explain reading interpretation with phasor diagrams.
Transformer Efficiency
Given KVA rating and losses, calculate:
Half-load efficiency at unity power factor
Full-load efficiency at 0.8 pf lag
Load at which maximum efficiency occurs
Maximum efficiency value
DC Motor
Draw construction, explain working principle, and list applications of DC motor.
This section prepares students for numerical and conceptual problem-solving.
SECTION C – Long Questions (7 Marks Each)
Q3 – AC Waveforms / Network Conversion (Attempt Any 1)
Calculate average value, RMS, form factor, and peak factor of a given periodic waveform
OR
Derive star-delta and delta-star transformation relationships
Q4 – Phasors / RL Circuit (Attempt Any 1)
Explain phasors and derive voltage-current relationship for pure R, L, and C circuits
OR
Given 200 V supply & RL circuit details, find:
Inductance
Power factor
Voltage across coil
Q5 – Power Factor / Delta Load / Meters (Attempt Any 2)
Causes of low power factor + methods of power factor improvement
3 identical coils (8 + j6) Ω in delta on 400 V → Find:
Line current
Power factor
Active & reactive power
Total kVA
Moving-coil ammeter: convert 15 µA meter to 1A range → Find required shunt
Q6 – Magnetic Circuits / Transformer / Analogy (Attempt Any 2)
Analogy between magnetic and electric circuits
Iron ring with gap: find MMF, reluctance, flux, flux density
Working of single-phase transformer + condition for maximum efficiency
Q7 – Induction Motor / DC Generator (Attempt Any 1)
Torque-slip characteristics + numerical to find slip and number of poles
OR
EMF equation of DC generator + characteristics of series motor + numerical on power developed
