(SEM VIII) THEORY EXAMINATION 2020-21 APPLICATION TO SOFT COMPUTING
SECTION A – Short Answer / Concept Check (2 × 7 = 14 marks)
Purpose of Section A
Section A checks your basic understanding and definitions of core soft computing concepts. Answers must be short, direct, and to the point. No long explanations are required here.
You are required to attempt all questions.
Type of questions asked
This section includes: Definitions (like fuzzification)
Properties (like properties of fuzzy sets) Applications (Neuro-Fuzzy System, ANN, GA)
Simple comparisons (hard vs soft computing) Diagrams or flowcharts (GA steps)
How to write answers in Section A Write 2–4 crisp points per question
Use simple language
If asked for a diagram or flowchart, draw a neat labeled diagram
Avoid unnecessary theory
Example expectation
If the question asks “What is fuzzification?”, you should define it clearly in 2–3 lines and maybe give a small example.
If it asks applications, list 4–5 real-world uses. This section is scoring if answers are precise.
SECTION B – Medium Length Descriptive Questions (7 × 3 = 21 marks)
Purpose of Section B
Section B tests your conceptual clarity and explanation ability. You need to explain how and why things work.
You must attempt any three questions.
Type of questions asked
This section focuses on: Neural models (McCulloch–Pitts neuron)
Learning and training algorithms Fuzzy set concepts (cardinality)
Real-world fuzzy applications (air conditioner control)
Genetic Algorithm terminology (chromosome, fitness, crossover, mutation)
Depth expected Proper definitions
Step-by-step explanation Neat diagrams, wherever applicable
Examples to support answers How to write answers
Start with a definition Explain the concept clearly
Add diagram or flowchart if relevant End with an example or application
Example expectation
For “Explain air conditioner control using fuzzy logic”, you should:
Explain inputs and outputs Describe fuzzy rules
Explain how comfort level is achieved Each answer should be about 1.5–2 pages in the exam.
SECTION C – Long Answer / Analytical Questions (7 × 5 = 35 marks)
Purpose of Section C
Section C checks your in-depth understanding, analytical thinking, and presentation skills. These are core exam questions.
You attempt one question from each unit, usually 5 questions total, each carrying 7 marks.
Type of questions asked
This section covers: ANN taxonomy and training algorithms
Perceptron and ADALINE models Backpropagation learning
Fuzzy logic membership functions and decision making
Fuzzy logic system components Genetic Algorithm operators and evaluation
GA fitness function design problems Depth expected
Full theoretical explanation Proper architecture diagrams
Algorithms written step-by-step Mathematical expressions where required
Real-world examples How to write answers
Begin with clear definition Explain architecture / model
Write algorithm steps Add diagram
Conclude with advantages or applications Example expectation
For “Explain back propagation learning”, you should:
Define backpropagation Explain forward and backward pass
Include weight update equation Explain learning process clearly
Each answer should be 2–3 pages with diagrams.
