(SEM VIII) THEORY EXAMINATION 2020-21 GEOLOGY AND SOIL MECHANICS
SECTION A – Explanation
Section A of the Geology and Soil Mechanics paper is designed to test the student’s basic conceptual clarity and foundational knowledge of geology and soil mechanics. All questions in this section are compulsory and require short but precise answers. The examiner expects students to demonstrate clear understanding of definitions, basic concepts, and simple diagrams related to earth materials and soil properties.
The questions in this section include differences between petrology and geology, explanation of dip and strike with a diagram, definitions of true dip and apparent dip, definition of metamorphism, engineering properties of rocks, structural representation of clay minerals such as kaolinite and illite, and explanation of soil properties like porosity, degree of saturation, and void ratio. These topics form the backbone of engineering geology and soil mechanics and are repeatedly used in advanced numerical and design problems.
For example, questions on dip and strike test the student’s ability to understand the orientation of rock layers, which is essential for engineering projects like tunnels and dams. Questions related to porosity and void ratio test fundamental soil behavior, which directly influences strength and settlement characteristics.
Answers in this section must be brief, technically correct, and supported by neat diagrams wherever required. Accuracy is more important than length, and vague answers can easily reduce marks.
SECTION B – Explanation
Section B is intended to evaluate the student’s conceptual understanding and problem-solving ability in geology and soil mechanics. Students are required to attempt any three questions, which allows them to select topics based on their preparation strength. The questions in this section are descriptive and numerical in nature and require moderate-length answers.
The questions in this section cover topics such as the definition of minerals and detailed study of rock-forming minerals, types of folds and their formation, earthquakes and tsunamis with special emphasis on tectonic earthquakes, geological investigations for dams and reservoirs, and numerical problems related to partially saturated soil involving water content, unit weight, degree of saturation, and void ratio. These questions assess both theoretical knowledge and application of concepts.
For instance, questions on folds require students to explain how rock layers deform under stress and to describe different fold types relevant to structural geology. Geological investigation of dams tests understanding of site selection, rock quality, fault analysis, and groundwater conditions. The numerical problem requires students to apply soil mechanics formulas systematically to determine soil parameters.
Answers in this section should be written in a clear sequence, starting with definitions, followed by explanations or calculations, and ending with proper conclusions. Neat presentation and logical flow play an important role in scoring well.
SECTION C – Explanation
Section C is the most important and highest-weight section of the Geology and Soil Mechanics paper. This section tests the student’s in-depth understanding, analytical skills, and ability to explain complex geological and soil mechanics phenomena. Each question provides internal choices, and students must attempt one part from each question.
The questions in Section C cover advanced and application-oriented topics such as the internal structure of the earth based on seismological evidence, formation and uses of rocks, differences between joints and faults, stratification and lamination with cross-bedding phenomena, landslides including their types, causes, and preventive measures, seismic zones of India with construction considerations, geophysical exploration methods for subsurface investigation, groundwater depletion in India, Boussinesq equation for stress distribution due to point load, and comparison of earth pressure theories.
These questions require detailed explanations supported by diagrams, derivations, and engineering relevance. For example, the question on the internal structure of the earth expects discussion of crust, mantle, and core based on seismic wave behavior. Landslide questions require explanation of geological, hydrological, and human-induced causes along with preventive measures. Soil mechanics questions such as Boussinesq’s theory require proper derivation and explanation of assumptions. Answers in this section generally extend over two to three pages and significantly influence the final score.
Overall Understanding of the Paper Pattern
The Geology and Soil Mechanics (RCE-071) question paper is structured to test students progressively from basic concepts to advanced analytical understanding. Section A checks fundamental definitions and properties, Section B evaluates conceptual clarity and numerical application, while Section C focuses on detailed explanation, engineering relevance, and analytical depth. Students who understand this structure can prepare efficiently by revising basic terminology for Section A, practicing explanations and numericals for Section B, and mastering long descriptive answers with diagrams for Section C.
A strong preparation strategy for this subject includes understanding geological structures, practicing soil mechanics numericals, revising seismic and landslide topics, and being comfortable with stress distribution theories. Section C carries the maximum weight and requires special attention for achieving high marks.
