(SEM VIII) THEORY EXAMINATION 2020-21 WATER RESOURCES
SECTION A – Explanation
Section A of the Water Resources paper is intended to test the student’s basic conceptual clarity and foundational knowledge of hydrology, irrigation, and water resources engineering. All questions in this section are compulsory and require brief, precise, and technically correct answers. The examiner expects students to demonstrate clear understanding of standard definitions and fundamental principles that are frequently used in numerical and design problems.
The questions in this section include concepts such as infiltration, unit hydrograph, relationship between duty and delta, Lacey’s silt theory, necessity of canal falls, base period and crop period, and causes of failure of earthen dams. These topics form the backbone of water resources engineering. For example, infiltration explains how water enters the soil surface, which is essential for runoff estimation. The unit hydrograph concept tests understanding of rainfall–runoff relationships. The duty–delta relation connects crop water requirement with canal discharge. Lacey’s silt theory checks awareness of alluvial channel design principles. Questions on canal falls and earthen dam failures test practical irrigation and dam engineering knowledge. Answers in this section should be short, direct, and accurate. Diagrams are generally not required, but clarity of definition is crucial to score full marks.
SECTION B – Explanation
Section B evaluates the student’s conceptual understanding and problem-solving ability related to hydrology, irrigation engineering, canals, and dams. Students are required to attempt any three questions, allowing them to select questions based on their strengths. The questions in this section involve both numerical problems and descriptive explanations.
The questions cover estimation of missing rainfall data using the arithmetic mean method, direct methods of measuring consumptive use of water, calculation of discharge of a watercourse based on kor period and kor depth, canal regulation works and their functions, and explanation of gravity dams along with the forces acting on them. These questions require application of theoretical concepts to practical engineering situations. For instance, the rainfall estimation problem tests hydrological data analysis.
Consumptive use measurement checks understanding of crop water requirements. The watercourse discharge problem combines irrigation terminology with calculations. Canal regulation works and gravity dam questions test structural and functional understanding of irrigation and dam systems. Answers in this section should be written in a logical flow, starting with definitions or given data, followed by explanation or calculations, and ending with conclusions. The expected length is about one and a half to two pages per question.
SECTION C – Explanation
Section C is the most important and highest-weight section of the Water Resources paper. This section tests the student’s in-depth understanding, analytical ability, and design skills in hydrology, irrigation engineering, canals, dams, and reservoirs. Each question has internal choices, and students must attempt only one part from each question.
The questions in Section C include advanced topics such as S-hydrograph and derivation of unit hydrograph from it, design of irrigation channels using Kennedy’s theory, methods of irrigation with advantages and disadvantages, development of a 6-hour unit hydrograph from a 3-hour unit hydrograph, comparison of Kennedy’s and Lacey’s theories with defects, water logging and its effects with remedial measures, cross drainage works and their types, diversion head works with causes of failure of weirs, outlets and their requirements, and investigations required for reservoir planning including storage definitions. These questions require detailed explanations supported by diagrams, derivations, and step-by-step procedures wherever applicable.
For example, hydrograph questions test understanding of runoff analysis and transformation techniques. Channel design questions require application of empirical theories. Irrigation and water logging questions test understanding of agricultural water management. Cross drainage and diversion head works questions require structural and functional clarity. Reservoir planning questions evaluate knowledge of water storage concepts. Answers in this section generally extend over two to three pages and significantly influence the final score.
Overall Understanding of the Paper Pattern
The Water Resources (RCE-702) question paper is structured to assess students progressively from basic concepts to advanced analytical and design skills. Section A focuses on fundamental definitions and concepts, Section B evaluates conceptual clarity and moderate-level numerical and descriptive problem solving, and Section C tests deep understanding, design capability, and practical application of water resources engineering principles. Students who understand this structure can prepare effectively by revising basics for Section A, practicing standard numericals for Section B, and mastering long descriptive and design-based answers for Section C.
A strong preparation strategy includes understanding hydrology fundamentals, practicing hydrograph problems, revising irrigation terminology, and gaining clarity on canal, dam, and reservoir engineering concepts. Section C carries the maximum weight and requires special attention for scoring high marks.
