(SEM VII) THEORY EXAMINATION 2019-20 AUTOMOBILE ENGINEERING
SECTION A – Explanation
Section A of the Automobile Engineering paper is designed to test the student’s basic understanding of automobile systems, components, and fundamental calculations. All questions in this section are compulsory and require short, direct, and technically correct answers. The examiner uses this section to verify whether the student has clarity about core automobile engineering concepts that are essential for higher-level problem solving.
The questions in this section include enumeration of the main components of an automobile, numerical calculation related to engine torque, gear ratio, differential ratio and propeller shaft speed, types of gearboxes used in automobiles, broad classification of brakes, functions of a carburetor, main components of the steering system, and comparison of CNG fuel with diesel from a pollution point of view. These questions cover all major automobile subsystems such as engine, transmission, braking, steering, and fuels.
For example, the torque and speed numerical tests understanding of power transmission through gearbox and differential. The gearbox question checks knowledge of manual, automatic, synchromesh, and epicyclic gearboxes. The braking classification question evaluates awareness of mechanical, hydraulic, disc, and drum brakes. The CNG versus diesel question tests understanding of emissions and environmental impact. Answers in this section must be brief, precise, and written using correct automobile engineering terminology. Lengthy explanations are not required, but conceptual accuracy is essential to score full marks.
SECTION B – Explanation
Section B evaluates the student’s conceptual understanding and analytical ability related to automobile components and mechanisms. Students are required to attempt any three questions, which allows them to choose questions based on their preparation strength. The questions in this section are descriptive and numerical in nature and require moderate-length answers.
The questions in Section B include explanation of the construction and working of a fluid flywheel with neat sketch, numerical design problem of a single plate friction clutch assuming uniform wear theory, arrangement of constant mesh transmission for obtaining gear changes, advantages of constant mesh gearbox over sliding mesh gearbox, explanation of perfect steering and derivation of condition for perfect steering mechanism, and comparison between alternator and DC generator. These questions test understanding of power transmission, clutch design, steering geometry, and electrical systems in automobiles.
For instance, the clutch numerical problem checks understanding of torque transmission, pressure intensity, friction coefficient, and axial force. The steering mechanism question evaluates knowledge of Ackermann steering geometry and wheel alignment conditions. The alternator versus DC generator question tests understanding of modern automobile electrical systems. Answers in this section should be written in a logical sequence, starting with basic principles, followed by explanation, derivation, or calculations, and supported by neat sketches wherever required. Each answer generally spans about one and a half to two pages.
SECTION C – Explanation
Section C is the most important and highest-weight section of the Automobile Engineering paper. This section tests the student’s in-depth understanding, analytical skills, and ability to explain complete automobile systems and their working in detail. Each question has internal choices, and students must attempt only one part from each question.
The questions in Section C cover advanced and application-oriented topics such as working of multi-plate clutch with diagram, construction and working of synchromesh gearbox, braking system and factors affecting braking performance, explanation of steering systems with geometry, suspension systems and their types, layout and working of battery ignition system, fuel injection systems, emission control techniques, and comparative study of conventional and modern automobile technologies. These questions require detailed explanation supported by neat diagrams, working principles, and engineering relevance.
For example, questions on clutch and gearbox require explanation of torque transmission and smooth gear engagement. Braking system questions test understanding of stopping distance, braking efficiency, and safety. Steering and suspension questions evaluate vehicle stability and ride comfort concepts.
Ignition system questions test understanding of spark generation and engine performance. Answers in this section should be detailed, well-structured, and written clearly. Each answer generally extends over two to three pages and plays a major role in determining the final score.
Overall Understanding of the Paper Pattern
The Automobile Engineering (RME-702) question paper is structured to evaluate students progressively from basic knowledge to advanced system-level understanding. Section A focuses on fundamental definitions, components, and simple numericals, Section B evaluates conceptual clarity and design-based problem solving, and Section C tests deep understanding of automobile systems, mechanisms, and performance analysis. Students who understand this structure can prepare effectively by revising basics for Section A, practicing numericals and derivations for Section B, and mastering long descriptive answers with diagrams for Section C.
A strong preparation strategy for this subject includes understanding transmission systems, clutch and brake design, steering geometry, and modern automobile technologies. Section C carries the highest weight and requires special attention for achieving high marks.
