(SEM VII) THEORY EXAMINATION 2019-20 DATA COMMUNICATION NETWORK
SECTION A – Explanation
Section A of the Data Communication Network paper is meant to test the student’s fundamental understanding of basic networking concepts, numerical ability, and protocol awareness. All questions in this section are compulsory and require short, precise, and technically correct answers. The examiner checks whether the student can apply basic formulas, definitions, and reasoning without lengthy derivations.
The questions in this section include numerical analysis of a periodic signal where bandwidth and highest frequency are given and the lowest frequency must be calculated, identification of four basic network topologies along with one advantage of each, explanation of error detection and correction capability based on Hamming distance, understanding of byte stuffing and unstuffing, justification of whether a host can have more than one IP address, conversion of IPv4 addresses from decimal notation to binary form, and explanation of error detection and correction along with its necessity.
For example, the signal bandwidth question tests understanding of frequency spectrum and basic signal theory. The topology question checks conceptual clarity of network structures such as bus, star, ring, and mesh. Hamming distance questions test coding theory fundamentals used in error control. Byte stuffing questions evaluate data link layer knowledge. IP addressing questions test networking fundamentals, while error detection and correction questions evaluate understanding of reliable data transmission. Answers in this section should be brief, direct, and accurate. Lengthy explanations are not required, but incorrect reasoning can lead to loss of marks.
SECTION B – Explanation
Section B evaluates the student’s conceptual clarity and ability to explain networking mechanisms and protocols in moderate detail. Students are required to attempt any three questions, which allows them flexibility based on their preparation. The questions in this section are descriptive and analytical in nature.
The questions in Section B include explanation of protocol layering and the rules followed to enable bidirectional communication, definition of random access protocols along with listing protocols under this category, comparison between flow control and error control, detailed explanation of framing, and a short note on cryptography. These questions test understanding of layered architecture, medium access techniques, data link layer mechanisms, and basic security concepts.
For instance, protocol layering questions test understanding of how communication complexity is reduced using layers. Random access questions examine knowledge of multiple access techniques like ALOHA and CSMA. Flow control versus error control checks conceptual distinction between rate regulation and error recovery. Framing questions test understanding of how data boundaries are maintained. Cryptography questions test basic awareness of data security in networks. Answers in this section should be written in a continuous, logical flow, starting with definitions and followed by explanation and examples. Each answer typically spans about one and a half to two pages.
SECTION C – Explanation
Section C is the most important and highest-weight section of the Data Communication Network paper. This section tests the student’s in-depth understanding, analytical skills, and ability to explain protocols, encoding, and network mechanisms in detail. Each question has internal choices, and students must attempt only one part from each question.
Although only one page is visible, based on the standard AKTU DCN paper pattern, Section C generally includes long-answer questions on topics such as line coding techniques, NRZ encoding schemes, protocol elements and protocol layering principles, switching techniques like datagram and virtual circuit, persistence methods in CSMA, Ethernet characteristics and MAC addressing, TCP segment structure and connection management, ATM architecture, and detailed error and flow control protocols.
These questions require structured explanations supported by diagrams, encoding examples, protocol working steps, and comparisons. Answers in Section C should be detailed, logically arranged, and written with clarity. Each answer usually extends over two to three pages and plays a decisive role in determining the final score. Proper diagrams, clear terminology, and correct sequence of explanation are extremely important in this section.
Overall Understanding of the Paper Pattern
The Data Communication Network (REC-701) question paper is structured to test students progressively from basic concepts to advanced networking knowledge. Section A focuses on fundamental definitions, simple numericals, and short reasoning questions. Section B evaluates conceptual clarity and protocol understanding at a moderate depth. Section C tests deep understanding of communication techniques, protocols, and network architectures through long descriptive answers. Students who understand this structure can prepare efficiently by strengthening basics for Section A, practicing explanations for Section B, and mastering detailed protocol-level concepts for Section C.
A strong preparation strategy includes revising signal fundamentals, network topologies, error control techniques, protocol layering, multiple access methods, and transport-layer mechanisms. Section C carries the maximum weight and requires special attention for scoring high marks.
