(SEM VII) THEORY EXAMINATION 2017-18 COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN
B.Tech exam answers.
(As per the uploaded question paper)
SECTION A
(Short answers – clear explanation)
1. What do you mean by Computer Aided Design (CAD)?
Computer Aided Design, commonly known as CAD, is the use of computer systems to assist engineers and designers in creating, modifying, analyzing, and optimizing designs. CAD software allows precise drawing of components, easy modification of designs, better visualization through 2D and 3D models, and improved productivity. It reduces manual effort and increases accuracy in engineering design.
2. What is concatenated transformation?
Concatenated transformation is the process of applying more than one geometric transformation to an object in sequence. Instead of applying transformations one by one, their matrices are multiplied together to form a single composite transformation matrix. This method saves computation time and is widely used in computer graphics and CAD systems.
SECTION B
(Medium answers – conceptual explanation)
3. State the various types of output devices used in a CAD workstation.
Output devices in a CAD workstation are used to display or produce design results. Common output devices include monitors for visual display, plotters for large-scale drawings, printers for hard copies, and 3D printers for producing physical models. These devices help designers visualize, analyze, and communicate design information effectively.
4. Explain the various steps required to solve a mechanical problem using Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
The solution of a mechanical problem using FEA begins with idealization of the physical system into a mathematical model. The structure is then discretized into small elements connected at nodes. Material properties and boundary conditions are applied. After forming element equations, they are assembled into a global system, solved for unknown values, and finally results such as stress and displacement are interpreted.
SECTION C
(Long answers – detailed explanation)
5. Explain the conventional product cycle with a neat block diagram.
The conventional product cycle starts with the identification of customer needs followed by product design and analysis. After design approval, manufacturing planning and production take place. The product is then marketed and delivered to customers. Feedback from customers is used for future improvements. CAD plays an important role in shortening this cycle by integrating design, analysis, and manufacturing.
6. Discuss the criteria for selection of a CAD/CAM system.
The selection of a CAD/CAM system depends on factors such as the type of industry, nature of products, required accuracy, compatibility with existing systems, and cost. Other important criteria include ease of use, availability of technical support, hardware requirements, and software flexibility. A proper selection ensures higher productivity and better return on investment.
