HUMAN VALUES IN VEDIC DARŚANA (KOE-099)
B.Tech Semester VIII – Theory Answers
SECTION A
(a) Nyāya Darśana
Nyāya Darśana is one of the six orthodox systems of Indian philosophy that primarily deals with logic, reasoning, and epistemology. It provides systematic methods for acquiring valid knowledge and emphasizes correct reasoning as the means to remove ignorance and attain liberation. Nyāya Darśana focuses on understanding reality through proper means of knowledge such as perception, inference, comparison, and testimony.
(b) Nitya–Anitya
Nitya refers to that which is eternal, permanent, and unchanging, whereas Anitya refers to that which is temporary, impermanent, and subject to change. In Vedic Darśana, the soul (Ātman) is considered nitya, while the physical body and material world are considered anitya. Understanding this distinction helps individuals detach from transient pleasures and focus on eternal truth.
(c) Meaning of Dhāraṇā
Dhāraṇā means concentration or holding the mind steadily on a chosen object or idea. It is an important stage in yogic practice where mental distractions are reduced, and attention is focused inward. Dhāraṇā prepares the practitioner for deeper meditation and self-realization.
(d) Īśvara
Īśvara refers to the supreme cosmic intelligence or divine controller of the universe. In Vedic philosophy, Īśvara is the cause of creation, sustenance, and dissolution of the universe. He is omniscient, omnipotent, and compassionate, guiding the moral and cosmic order.
(e) Nature of Mukti
Mukti refers to liberation from the cycle of birth and death. It is the state in which the soul realizes its true nature and attains freedom from ignorance, suffering, and bondage. Mukti is characterized by eternal peace, bliss, and unity with ultimate reality.
(f) Varṇa System
The Varṇa system is a social classification based on individual qualities, duties, and responsibilities. It includes Brāhmaṇa, Kṣatriya, Vaiśya, and Śūdra. The system was originally intended to promote social harmony and division of labor based on merit and aptitude, not birth.
(g) Dharma
Dharma refers to righteous conduct, moral duty, and the natural law that sustains order in the universe. It guides human behavior in personal, social, and spiritual life. Following Dharma leads to harmony, justice, and spiritual growth.
(h) Aṣṭāṃga Yoga
Aṣṭāṃga Yoga is the eightfold path of yogic discipline described by Patañjali. It includes ethical conduct, self-discipline, posture, breath control, withdrawal of senses, concentration, meditation, and absorption. This path leads to mental purification and self-realization.
(i) Sukha–Duḥkha
Sukha refers to happiness or pleasure, while Duḥkha refers to suffering or pain. In Vedic Darśana, both are experiences arising from interaction with the material world. True wisdom lies in understanding their temporary nature and maintaining inner balance beyond both.
(j) Nature of Ātman
Ātman is the true self of an individual. It is eternal, conscious, pure, and independent of the body and mind. Vedic Darśana teaches that realization of the Ātman leads to liberation and ultimate knowledge.
SECTION B
2(a) Dharma, Abhyudaya, and Niḥśreyasa
Dharma provides the ethical foundation for righteous living. Abhyudaya refers to material and social prosperity achieved through righteous action. Niḥśreyasa represents spiritual liberation and ultimate fulfillment. Vedic Darśana integrates all three, emphasizing balanced development of material well-being and spiritual progress.
2(b) Steps of Samādhi
Samādhi is the highest stage of yogic practice, where the mind becomes completely absorbed in the object of meditation. It involves deep concentration leading to dissolution of ego and realization of truth. Through Samādhi, the practitioner experiences inner peace and spiritual awakening.
2(c) Names of God and their meanings
Vedic Darśana describes God using various names, each representing a specific attribute. Names such as Brahman denote absolute reality, Īśvara signifies cosmic controller, and Nārāyaṇa indicates the sustainer of the universe. These names help devotees understand different aspects of the divine.
2(d) Nature of Paramātma and Brahman
Paramātma refers to the supreme soul that resides within all beings, guiding them inwardly. Brahman is the ultimate, formless, infinite reality that pervades everything. Both represent the same ultimate truth viewed from different perspectives.
2(e) Natural outcome of such a program on society
When society follows Vedic principles, individuals live ethically, responsibly, and harmoniously. Such a program leads to social justice, peace, mutual respect, and sustainable living. It reduces conflict, greed, and exploitation.
SECTION C
3(a) Introduction to Vedic Literature and need to study Vedic Darśana
Vedic literature includes the Vedas, Upaniṣads, Brāhmaṇas, and Āraṇyakas, which collectively explore knowledge, rituals, philosophy, and spirituality. Studying Vedic Darśana helps individuals understand life, purpose, values, and the nature of existence. It provides timeless wisdom for ethical living and spiritual realization.
3(b) Meaning and characteristics of Nitya–Anitya
Nitya refers to eternal and unchanging reality, while Anitya refers to transient and changing phenomena. Ātman and Brahman are nitya, whereas body, possessions, and worldly pleasures are anitya. Recognizing this distinction enables detachment, wisdom, and spiritual growth.
