(SEM II) THEORY EXAMINATION 2024-25 FUNDAMENTALS OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
B.Tech (Semester II) Theory Examination 2024–25
Maximum Marks: 70 | Time: 3 Hours
Medium: Hindi / English / Mixed
This question paper evaluates a student’s understanding of basic mechanical engineering principles, including mechanics, thermodynamics, refrigeration, engines, turbines, viscosity, pressure measurement, mechatronics, and material behavior.
The paper is divided into three major sections – A, B, and C, progressing from short conceptual questions to analytical and numerical problems.
SECTION A – Short Answer Questions (14 Marks | 7 × 2)
This section tests basic definitions, concepts, and straightforward explanations.
Topics include:
Poisson’s ratio and elastic constants
Electric vs conventional engine-based vehicles
COP of refrigeration system
Newtonian and Non-Newtonian fluids
Temperature-measuring instruments
Mechatronics and its key elements
Difference between dry bulb and wet bulb temperatures
Focus: Fundamental theory, definitions, and direct concepts.
SECTION B – Descriptive Questions (21 Marks | Attempt Any 3)
This section tests understanding through diagrams, construction, working principles, and engineering explanations.
Topics include:
Stress–strain diagrams for ductile & brittle materials
Construction, working, P–V and T–S diagrams for 4-stroke petrol engine
Domestic refrigerator construction & working
Pelton wheel turbine schematic and applications
Prony brake dynamometer construction & brake power formula derivation
Focus: Diagram-based explanations, processes, and engineering mechanisms.
SECTION C – Long/Analytical Questions (35 Marks | 5 Questions × 7 Marks Each)
Application-based and numerical questions.
Q3 — Mechanics / Force Resultant
Choose one:
Resultant tension on a vessel pulled by two locomotives + angle calculation
Support reactions in a beam (static equilibrium)
Q4 — IC Engines & Vehicles
Choose one:
Comparison of CI vs SI engines + role of MPFI
Comparison of EVs, HEVs & IC-engine vehicles (fuel economy, emissions, cost, range, suitability)
Q5 — Thermodynamics & HVAC
Choose one:
Heat pump definition + numerical on minimum power required
Short notes on: dew point temperature & comfort air-conditioning
Q6 — Viscosity & Fluid Mechanics
Choose one:
Dynamic & kinematic viscosity of oil between sliding plates (numerical)
Pascal’s law + hydraulic press numerical (force multiplication)
Q7 — Pressure Measurement & Power Transmission
Choose one:
Pressure measuring methods (industrial instruments)
Power transmission systems: Ratchet mechanism & Belt drive
