MOBILE COMPUTING (NIT-801 / ECS-087)

According to the uploaded question paper

The examination is divided into three sections — A, B, and C — and each section evaluates different levels of understanding of Mobile Computing concepts. Below is a detailed and properly explained description of each section in continuous format.

Section A – Fundamental Concepts and Definitions (20 Marks)

Section A consists of ten compulsory short-answer questions, each carrying two marks. Even though the marks per question are small, this section is important because it checks your clarity of basic concepts in mobile computing.

The questions generally focus on definitions and short explanations of core topics such as mobile computing, wireless WAN and wireless LAN differences, routing algorithms like TORA, cellular concepts including near-far problem and frequency reuse, GSM services, Bluetooth, MANET, and data management issues.

This section mainly tests whether you understand the fundamental building blocks of mobile communication systems. You are expected to explain concepts clearly and technically correct, not just give one-word answers. For example, if asked about frequency reuse, you should briefly explain how the same frequency can be reused in different cells to improve spectrum efficiency. Similarly, when defining MANET, you should explain that it is a self-configuring infrastructure-less network of mobile nodes.

Strong conceptual clarity in this section helps build a foundation for the longer descriptive answers in later sections.

Section B – Detailed Theoretical and Architectural Understanding (30 Marks)

Section B requires you to attempt any three questions out of the given options. Each question carries ten marks and demands detailed explanations supported by diagrams wherever necessary.

This section focuses on system-level understanding. Questions cover topics such as characteristics and challenges of mobile computing, wireless LAN protocols like CSMA/CD, GPRS architecture, IEEE 802.11 LAN architecture and MAC logic, and MANET routing protocols such as DSR including path discovery and path maintenance.

Here, the examiner expects structured answers. For example, if discussing the challenges of mobile computing, you should explain issues such as limited bandwidth, variable connectivity, battery constraints, security threats, and mobility management. When explaining 802.11 architecture, you should describe components like Access Points, Stations, Basic Service Sets (BSS), and Extended Service Sets (ESS), along with how MAC coordination works.

This section evaluates your ability to describe networking architectures and communication protocols in detail and demonstrate logical understanding rather than simple memorization.

Section C – Advanced Concepts, Protocols, and Applications (50 Marks)

Section C carries the highest weightage in the paper and requires you to attempt one part from each question. This section tests advanced knowledge, analytical ability, and understanding of real-world mobile computing implementations.

The topics in this section include TCP performance issues in wireless networks, multi-cluster architecture, GSM architecture and security, fault tolerance and monitoring processes, Mobile IP entities and communication process, transaction management in mobile environments, CODA file system and disconnected operations, WAP architecture, and comparison between ad-hoc networks and other networks.

This section expects deep explanations. For instance, if explaining why traditional TCP performs poorly in wireless networks, you should describe how TCP assumes packet loss is due to congestion, whereas in wireless networks losses often occur due to signal interference and fading. Similarly, when discussing GSM architecture, you should explain components such as Mobile Station, Base Station Subsystem, and Network Switching Subsystem, along with security mechanisms like authentication and encryption.

Answers in this section should be comprehensive, logically organized, and supported by diagrams wherever applicable. This part evaluates whether you understand how mobile computing systems operate in practical and real-world scenarios.

Overall Paper Structure and Strategy

The paper is structured to gradually move from basic definitions in Section A, to detailed theoretical explanations in Section B, and finally to advanced protocol-level and architectural discussions in Section C.

To score well:

Build strong clarity of basic terms for Section A.

Prepare architectural diagrams and protocol explanations for Section B.

Practice writing structured, detailed answers with real-world reasoning for Section C.
