THEORY EXAMINATION (SEM–VIII) 2016-17 ADVANCE SYNTHESIS OF MECHANISMS
Section A
Section A contains short and basic questions that check the fundamental concepts of mechanism synthesis. Students have to write definitions, short notes, and simple explanations. These questions are direct and require precise answers. This section mainly tests basic theoretical knowledge and understanding of important terms used in mechanism design.
Example Questions from Section A:
What is the degree of freedom?
Explain the transmission angle.
Define dimensional synthesis.
What is a coupler curve?
What is mechanical error in linkage?
Explain exact straight line mechanism.
Section B
Section B includes medium-length questions that focus on explanation and application of concepts. Students are required to explain procedures, describe working of mechanisms, and solve design problems related to linkages. This section checks practical understanding and problem-solving ability.
Example Questions from Section B:
Discuss the procedure of five accuracy points synthesis of crank and follower mechanism.
Design a four-bar function generator with three accuracy points.
Explain cognate linkages with sketches.
Locate instantaneous centres of rotation in a mechanism.
Design a four-bar linkage for given angular displacements.
Section C
Section C contains long and advanced questions that require detailed solutions, calculations, and diagrams. Students must apply synthesis methods and mathematical concepts to design mechanisms. This section tests deep conceptual understanding and analytical skills.
Example Questions from Section C:
Design a slider crank mechanism using Chebyshev spacing.
Synthesize a four-bar linkage to generate a given function.
Explain approximate and exact straight line mechanisms with sketches.
