(SEM. II) THEORY EXAMINATION 2022-23 ENGINEERING PHYSICS
The Engineering Physics BAS201 Question Paper (2022–23) is a structured and comprehensive university examination designed for B.Tech First Year (Semester II) students. This exam evaluates how well students understand fundamental and applied physics concepts that are essential for their engineering foundation. The paper carries 70 marks and is divided into multiple sections, each crafted to test theoretical knowledge, conceptual clarity, derivation skills, and numerical problem-solving ability.
The question paper begins with Section A—a set of short-response questions aimed at testing quick conceptual understanding. These include important topics such as the Compton effect, Davisson–Germer experiment, difference between conduction and displacement current, interference patterns, diffraction through multiple slits, stimulated emission in lasers, and the definition of a quantum well. These questions measure how well students grasp the core physics principles that form the base of modern engineering.
Section B focuses on detailed explanations and derivations. It includes questions related to the failures of classical physics, Stokes' and Divergence theorems, Newton’s rings for refractive index measurement, numerical aperture of optical fibers, and the concept of superconductivity along with high-temperature superconductors and their applications. This section helps assess analytical thinking and the ability to interlink theory with real-world scenarios.
In Section C, students must attempt long, application-based questions requiring derivations, numerical calculations, and problem-solving. These include topics like group and phase velocity, Schrödinger equation for a particle in a 1D box, electromagnetic wave equations, skin depth, diffraction through slits, grating spectra, ruby laser construction, fiber losses, superconductivity under magnetic fields, and nanomaterials. This section thoroughly tests the student’s depth of understanding and mathematical skills.
Sample Questions From the Question Paper
Here are some sample questions taken directly from the paper to help students understand the pattern and difficulty level:
1. Can Compton effect be observed with visible light? Explain briefly.
2. What was the objective of conducting the Davisson–Germer experiment?
3. Differentiate between conduction current and displacement current.
4. Describe how Newton’s ring experiment can be used to determine the refractive index of a liquid.
5. Define numerical aperture of an optical fiber and show its relation with relative refractive index difference.
6. Solve Schrödinger equation for a free particle in a one-dimensional box and show that energy levels are discrete.
7. Derive electromagnetic wave equations in free space.
8. What are solid-state lasers? Explain the construction and working of a Ruby Laser with a neat diagram.
9. Discuss the factors responsible for loss of power in optical fiber.
10. What are nanomaterials? Discuss their properties, applications, and risks to the human body.
