Section A – Fundamental Concept Questions (Description)
Section A contains short conceptual questions designed to test the fundamental understanding of industrial automation systems and technologies. Students are expected to provide brief explanations of important terms related to automation, industrial networking, electric drives, and data acquisition.
The questions in this section mainly focus on basic definitions and concepts such as scalar control in electric drives, the information level and control level in industrial automation architecture, and communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP. Students must also understand the requirements of industrial networking and the role of real-time data acquisition in monitoring industrial processes.
Another important concept included in this section is the classification of electric drives, which are widely used in automation systems to control machines and industrial equipment. Topics such as disaster recovery and the importance of automation in improving productivity are also covered.

One of the major topics in this section is the Asset Management System, which is used to monitor and manage industrial equipment and improve operational efficiency. Students must also understand different industrial communication protocols such as MODBUS/TCP, EtherNet/IP, and MCode/TCP, and compare their characteristics.
This section also covers serial real-time communication systems and their topologies, which are important for industrial network design. Students must also explain how AC drives function and why they are often preferred over DC drives in modern industrial automation systems.
Other important topics include DeviceNet and Fieldbus networks, which are used for communication between industrial devices at different levels of factory automation. Students may also be asked to write short notes on Enterprise Manufacturing Intelligence and historian software, which help industries analyze and store large amounts of production data.

One of the main topics in this section is Controller Area Network (CAN), which is a widely used communication protocol in automation systems for reliable data exchange between controllers and devices. Students must explain how CAN helps standardize communication and discuss its advantages and limitations.
Another important concept in this section is time synchronization in automation systems. Accurate time synchronization is essential for coordinating different machines and processes in industrial environments. The question requires students to explain the Precision Time Protocol (PTP) and its working principles along with real-world applications.
The section also includes questions about servomechanisms, which are used in automation systems for precise control of motion and position. Students must explain how servo motors operate in closed-loop control systems to achieve accurate and stable performance.
