THEORY EXAMINATION (SEM–VIII) 2016-17 MULTIMEDIA SYSTEMS
Section A – Basic Concept Questions (Description)
Section A consists of short conceptual questions related to the fundamentals of multimedia technology. Students are required to give brief explanations of important multimedia concepts used in digital media systems.
The questions in this section cover topics such as pixels, compression techniques, anti-aliasing, digital image capture technologies, and multimedia file formats. Students must understand the difference between lossy and lossless compression, which is essential in multimedia data storage and transmission.
Other topics include analog vs digital video, MPEG standards, QuickTime multimedia framework, and hypertext systems, which are widely used in multimedia applications.
The purpose of this section is to evaluate the student’s understanding of basic multimedia concepts and terminology used in digital audio, video, and interactive media systems.

Section B – Descriptive Questions (Description)

One important topic in this section is digital audio processing, where students must explain how sound files are created and what factors affect their quality. This includes sampling rate, bit depth, and stereo recording.
Students may also be required to perform calculations related to audio data rates and file sizes, based on sampling frequency and bit resolution.
Another important concept is color representation in multimedia systems, including properties such as luminance, chrominance, and color difference signals used in video systems.
The section also includes discussions about popular audio and video file formats, multimedia coding techniques such as Huffman coding and arithmetic coding, and differences between interactive media, hypermedia, video, and animation.
Students must also understand display parameters such as horizontal scan rate, resolution, and dot pitch, which affect video display quality.

Section C – Long Analytical Questions (Description)
Section C includes long analytical questions related to multimedia compression techniques, digital video processing, and multimedia storage requirements.
One of the main topics in this section is dictionary-based compression techniques, which are used to reduce the size of multimedia files by replacing repeated data with shorter code representations. Students must explain the advantages and disadvantages of these compression methods.
Another important topic is color representation and video capturing techniques, which involve converting visual scenes into digital signals that can be processed by multimedia systems.
The section also includes questions related to digital video digitization and bit rate calculations, where students must derive formulas for the bit rate of video signals and estimate the storage required for multimedia content such as movies.
