Operation Research – Section Wise Explanation
Section A – Basic Concepts of Operation Research
Section A contains short questions that test the basic understanding of Operation Research (OR) concepts and definitions. Students must attempt all questions in this section.
Operation Research is a scientific method used to help organizations make better decisions. It uses mathematical models, statistical analysis, and optimization techniques to solve complex problems related to planning, scheduling, resource allocation, and logistics.
The main objective of Operation Research is to determine the best possible solution among many alternatives. It is widely used in industries such as transportation, manufacturing, finance, military planning, and project management.
One important concept in OR is the Linear Programming Problem (LPP). Linear programming is used to optimize a linear objective function subject to a set of linear constraints. It helps organizations maximize profit or minimize costs.
Another important concept is the transportation problem, which focuses on determining the most efficient way to transport goods from several sources to multiple destinations at minimum cost.
Network analysis concepts such as dummy activities are also important in project scheduling techniques like PERT and CPM.

One of the topics covered in this section is queuing theory, which studies waiting lines or queues. It helps organizations improve service efficiency by analyzing factors such as arrival rate, service rate, and waiting time.
For example, in a reservation system where customers arrive at a certain rate and are served by a clerk, queuing models help determine how long customers will wait and how many people will be in line on average.
Another important topic is Linear Programming. The graphical method is used to solve linear programming problems with two variables by plotting constraints and finding the optimal solution in the feasible region.
Simulation is another useful technique in Operation Research. Monte Carlo simulation uses random numbers and probability distributions to model real-world systems and predict outcomes.
Inventory management is also an important concept. The Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) model helps businesses determine the optimal order quantity that minimizes total inventory cost, including ordering cost and holding cost.
Another important problem discussed in this section is the assignment problem, where tasks must be assigned to workers in a way that minimizes total time or cost.
Transportation problems also require methods to test optimality and improve solutions.
Game theory is another key topic. It studies decision-making situations where multiple participants compete with each other. It helps businesses determine optimal strategies in competitive environments.

One of the advanced techniques in Operation Research is the Simplex Method, which is used to solve linear programming problems with multiple variables and constraints. The simplex method iteratively improves the solution until the optimal value is obtained.
Another important topic is game theory, which analyzes strategic interactions between competing players. In a two-person zero-sum game, the gain of one player is equal to the loss of the other.
The concept of a saddle point is used to determine the optimal strategy for both players. If a saddle point exists, both players can adopt pure strategies.
The section also discusses project management techniques such as crashing and resource leveling. Crashing involves reducing the duration of project activities by allocating additional resources, while resource leveling ensures efficient use of available resources.
Another application of Operation Research is in queuing models, which help improve customer service by minimizing waiting time and optimizing service efficiency.
These advanced techniques are widely used in industries to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and support strategic decision-making.
