THEORY EXAMINATION (SEM–VIII) 2016-17 OPTICAL NETWORKS
Optical Networks – Section Wise Explanation
Section A – Basic Concepts of Optical Networks
Section A contains short questions designed to test the basic understanding of optical communication systems and networking technologies. Students are required to attempt all questions in this section.
Optical networks are communication systems that transmit information using light signals through optical fiber cables. These networks are widely used for high-speed data transmission because they offer greater bandwidth, lower signal loss, and longer transmission distances compared to traditional copper-based communication systems.
One important concept in optical communication is the Extinction Ratio, which measures the difference between the optical power of the “ON” signal and the “OFF” signal. A higher extinction ratio indicates better signal quality and improved communication performance.
Another important technology used in optical networks is Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM). WDM allows multiple optical signals with different wavelengths to travel simultaneously through a single optical fiber. This significantly increases network capacity and efficiency.
Optical fiber networks are commonly implemented using three topologies: star topology, ring topology, and bus topology. Each topology has different advantages depending on the network design and application.
The Optical Line Terminal (OLT) is another important component used in passive optical networks. It acts as the central device that connects the service provider’s network to multiple users.
Technologies like SONET (Synchronous Optical Network) and SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) provide standardized frameworks for transmitting digital signals over optical fiber.
Other important concepts include crosstalk, which refers to unwanted interference between signals, and cross-phase modulation (XPM), which is a nonlinear optical effect that occurs when signals at different wavelengths interact with each other in the fiber.
Understanding these concepts is essential for designing and maintaining efficient optical communication networks.
Questions for Section A

What are the advantages of Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM)?
What are the three common topologies used in fiber optical networks?
What is the function of the Optical Line Terminal (OLT)?
What is SONET/SDH?
What is crosstalk in optical communication?
What are the important features of time-slotted optical TDM networks?
What is cross-phase modulation (XPM)?
What is HDLC?
How many switches are used in CLOS architecture?
Section B – Optical Network Components and Technologies
Section B focuses on detailed explanations of optical networking components, architectures, and communication mechanisms. Students must attempt any five questions from this section.
Large optical switches are essential components used to route optical signals between different fiber paths without converting them into electrical signals. Several architectures are used to build large optical switches, including crossbar switches, multistage switching networks, and CLOS switching architecture.
Another important topic is the SONET/SDH architecture, which consists of multiple layers responsible for data transmission, multiplexing, and network management. These layers ensure reliable communication and synchronization across optical networks.
Optical Add-Drop Multiplexers (OADM) are devices used in WDM systems that allow specific wavelengths to be added or removed from the optical signal without affecting other channels.
Optical communication systems are also affected by nonlinear effects, which occur when signal power becomes high. These nonlinear effects include phenomena such as self-phase modulation, cross-phase modulation, and four-wave mixing.
Routing and forwarding are key processes in network communication. IP routing determines the best path for data packets, while forwarding involves sending the packets to the correct destination through network devices such as routers.
Another important technology in optical networks is Bragg Gratings, which are periodic variations in the refractive index of an optical fiber. These structures reflect specific wavelengths of light and are widely used in filtering and sensing applications.
Understanding these components and technologies helps engineers design efficient optical communication systems.
Questions for Section B
What are large optical switches and why are they important?
Explain the different architectures used to build optical switches.
Describe the layers of SONET/SDH with a diagram.
Explain the architecture and working of Optical Add-Drop Multiplexers (OADM).
What are the nonlinear effects in optical communication systems?
Explain IP routing and packet forwarding with a diagram.
What are Bragg gratings and how do they work?
Draw and explain the building blocks of an optical network.
Section C – Advanced Optical Networking Techniques
Section C contains advanced questions related to optical switching technologies, network protection mechanisms, and network design. Students must attempt any two questions from this section.
Optical switching is a key technology used to control and route optical signals in communication networks. There are different approaches to optical switching, including optical circuit switching, optical packet switching, and optical burst switching.
Optical layer protection is another important concept. Optical networks must ensure reliability and continuity of service even when failures occur. Protection mechanisms automatically reroute traffic when a fiber link or network component fails.
Another advanced concept is light path topology design in WDM networks. In WDM systems, multiple wavelengths are used to transmit signals simultaneously. Designing efficient light paths helps minimize network cost and improve performance.
Engineers must consider several parameters while designing optical networks, including transmission capacity, signal attenuation, network topology, and wavelength allocation.
These advanced techniques help create scalable and reliable communication systems capable of supporting high-speed internet and large data transmissions.
Questions for Section C
Explain different optical switching technologies with diagrams.
What are the different approaches used in optical switching?
Discuss the various schemes used for optical layer protection.
What are the design parameters for light path topology in WDM networks?
How can network cost be minimized in WDM network design?
Conclusion
The Optical Networks exam paper evaluates knowledge at three levels. Section A focuses on fundamental definitions and concepts of optical communication. Section B examines detailed understanding of optical network components and architectures. Section C tests advanced knowledge of optical switching, protection mechanisms, and network design.
Optical networks are essential for modern communication systems because they support high-speed internet, large-scale data transfer, and reliable global connectivity.
