THEORY EXAMINATION (SEM–VIII) 2016-17 PLANT LAYOUT & MATERIAL HANDLING
Plant Layout & Material Handling – Section Wise Explanation
Section A – Basic Concepts of Plant Layout and Material Handling
Section A includes short questions that test the basic understanding of production systems, plant layout, and material handling concepts. Students must attempt all questions in this section.
Plant layout refers to the arrangement of machines, workstations, equipment, and departments within a manufacturing facility. The main objective of plant layout is to ensure smooth workflow, efficient production, and minimal movement of materials.
One important concept in plant layout is the flow line, which represents the path followed by materials during the manufacturing process. Proper flow lines help reduce delays and improve production efficiency.
A workstation is a specific area in a manufacturing system where a particular task or operation is performed. Workstations are designed to ensure that workers and machines operate efficiently.
Material handling is another important concept. It refers to the movement, storage, protection, and control of materials throughout the manufacturing process. Efficient material handling helps reduce production time, labor costs, and damage to materials.
Various devices such as cranes, conveyors, forklifts, and hoists are used as lifting and transportation equipment in industries.
The concept of Total Quality Management (TQM) is also important in modern manufacturing. TQM focuses on continuous improvement in production processes to ensure high product quality and customer satisfaction.
Other concepts include waiting lines, which occur when materials or customers wait for service, and production, which refers to the process of converting raw materials into finished goods.
Understanding these fundamental concepts helps students learn how manufacturing systems operate efficiently.
Questions for Section A
What are flow lines in plant layout?
What are workstations?
What are the different lifting devices used in industries?
What is material handling?
What is Total Quality Management (TQM)?
What is a waiting line?
What factors influence the selection of plant layout?
What are the different systems used for material handling?
What is production?
Section B – Plant Layout Design and Industrial Systems
Section B focuses on detailed explanations of plant layout planning, industrial systems, and manufacturing design. Students must attempt any five questions in this section.
Designing an effective plant layout requires careful planning and data collection. During the planning stage, engineers gather information about production processes, machine requirements, space availability, material flow, and safety considerations.
One widely used method for plant layout planning is Richard Muther’s Systematic Layout Planning (SLP). This approach helps engineers design layouts by analyzing relationships between departments, workflow patterns, and space requirements.
Industrial plants such as oil refineries require additional services such as water supply, power systems, cooling systems, and waste treatment facilities. Effluent treatment plants are especially important because they treat industrial waste before it is released into the environment.
The design of manufacturing systems also requires consideration of several factors including production volume, machine capacity, workforce requirements, and process flexibility.
Material flow is another important aspect of plant layout. Efficient material flow reduces transportation time and improves productivity.
Industrial regulations such as the Indian Factory Act ensure worker safety, health standards, and proper working conditions in manufacturing plants.
Another important concept is the ranking and weight method for plant location, which helps companies select the best location for establishing a new factory by comparing different factors such as transportation, labor availability, and infrastructure.
Questions for Section B
What information is required during the data collection phase of plant layout planning?
Sketch a recommended layout for a processing industry.
Explain Richard Muther’s approach to systematic layout planning.
Describe the plant services required in an oil refinery.
Why is effluent treatment important in industrial plants?
What factors should be considered when designing a manufacturing system?
Explain the significance of material flow in plant layout design.
Explain the Indian Factory Act and its importance in industrial safety.
Discuss the ranking and weight method for selecting plant location.
Section C – Advanced Industrial Planning Concepts
Section C contains advanced questions related to industrial plant location, material handling equipment, and intelligent building design. Students must attempt any two questions from this section.
One important topic in this section is industrial location planning. Different industries require different conditions to operate efficiently. For example, the textile industry in Mumbai developed due to the availability of ports, labor, and transportation facilities. Similarly, automobile industries in Faridabad grew because of access to markets, infrastructure, and raw materials.
Another important topic is the classification of material handling equipment. Material handling equipment is used to transport, lift, store, and control materials during manufacturing processes. These include conveyors, cranes, forklifts, and automated systems.
For example, overhead cranes are used in heavy industries to lift large loads, while roller conveyors are used to move materials along assembly lines.
The concept of intelligent buildings is also discussed in this section. Intelligent buildings use advanced technologies such as automation systems, sensors, and smart energy management systems to improve efficiency and comfort.
These buildings are designed to optimize energy usage, improve security, and enhance environmental sustainability.
Understanding these advanced concepts helps engineers design efficient industrial facilities and modern manufacturing environments.
Questions for Section C
What factors influence the location of textile industries in Mumbai?
Why is Faridabad suitable for automobile industries?
Explain the classification of material handling equipment.
Describe the working of overhead cranes.
Explain roller conveyors with examples.
What factors are considered while designing intelligent buildings?
Explain the concept of intelligent buildings.
Conclusion
The Plant Layout & Material Handling exam paper evaluates knowledge at three levels. Section A focuses on basic concepts of production, plant layout, and material handling systems. Section B examines planning techniques, industrial systems, and manufacturing design principles. Section C explores advanced topics related to industrial location, material handling equipment, and intelligent building design.
Understanding these concepts is important for designing efficient industrial plants and improving manufacturing productivity.
