THEORY EXAMINATION (SEM–VIII) 2016-17 POWER QUALITY
Power Quality – Section Wise Explanation
Section A – Basic Concepts of Power Quality
Section A contains short questions that test the basic concepts of electrical power quality and disturbances in power systems. Students must attempt all questions in this section.
Power quality refers to the ability of an electrical power system to provide stable voltage, frequency, and waveform to electrical equipment. Good power quality ensures that electrical devices operate properly without malfunction or damage.
Poor power quality can cause problems such as voltage fluctuations, harmonics, interruptions, and equipment failure. Modern industries depend heavily on sensitive electronic equipment, which makes maintaining good power quality extremely important.
One common power quality issue is harmonics, which are distortions in the electrical waveform caused by nonlinear loads such as computers, power converters, and electronic devices. Harmonics can lead to overheating, equipment malfunction, and increased power losses.
Another important concept is voltage sag, which is a temporary reduction in voltage level. Voltage sags often occur due to faults in power systems or during the starting of large motors.
Motor starting methods are also important in power quality management because large motors draw high current during startup, which may cause voltage drops.
Power systems also experience transient overvoltages, which are sudden increases in voltage caused by lightning strikes or switching operations.
To protect equipment from such voltage surges, devices such as surge arresters are used.
Another important concept is the true power factor, which measures the ratio between real power and apparent power in a system, considering the effects of harmonics.
Understanding these basic concepts helps engineers identify and manage power quality problems effectively.
Questions for Section A
What is power quality?
How can power quality problems be detected?
What are harmonics?
What are the types of voltage sag?
What is voltage sag?
What are the different motor starting methods?
What are transient overvoltages?
Why are surge arresters used?
What is true power factor?
What are the different types of inverters?
Section B – Power Quality Improvement Techniques
Section B focuses on detailed explanations of power quality problems and the techniques used to improve them. Students must attempt any five questions from this section.
Poor power quality can have serious effects on electrical systems. It can reduce system efficiency, cause equipment failure, and increase maintenance costs. Industries such as manufacturing plants, data centers, and hospitals require stable power supply to maintain reliable operations.
One device used to improve power quality is DSTATCOM (Distribution Static Synchronous Compensator). DSTATCOM is a power electronic device used to regulate voltage and compensate for reactive power in distribution systems. It helps maintain voltage stability and reduce harmonic distortion.
Power quality can also be improved using series and shunt compensators. Series compensators regulate voltage by inserting voltage in series with the line, while shunt compensators control reactive power by injecting or absorbing current.
Another technique used for harmonic mitigation is the use of passive filters. Passive filters consist of inductors, capacitors, and resistors that remove unwanted harmonic frequencies from power systems.
However, passive filters also have limitations such as resonance issues and lack of flexibility.
Advanced devices such as the Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) combine both series and shunt compensation techniques to improve voltage and current quality simultaneously.
Voltage sag mitigation techniques include using voltage regulators, dynamic voltage restorers, and energy storage systems.
Voltage imbalance and voltage fluctuation are also important issues in power systems. Voltage imbalance occurs when the three-phase voltages are not equal, while voltage fluctuation refers to variations in voltage magnitude over time.
Understanding these concepts helps engineers maintain stable and reliable electrical power systems.
Questions for Section B
What are the impacts of poor power quality on electrical systems?
Explain the working principle of DSTATCOM.
How does DSTATCOM perform load compensation?
What are series and shunt compensators?
Compare series and shunt compensation techniques.
What are passive filters?
What factors should be considered when designing passive filters?
Explain the limitations of passive filters.
What is a Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC)?
What is the difference between voltage sag and undervoltage?
What techniques are used to mitigate voltage sag?
What causes voltage imbalance in power systems?
What devices are used to monitor voltage-related power quality problems?
Section C – Advanced Power Quality Issues
Section C contains advanced questions related to power system disturbances and methods for maintaining stable electrical supply. Students must attempt any two questions from this section.
One important concept discussed in this section is neutral voltage. Neutral voltage fluctuations can occur in unbalanced electrical systems and may cause equipment malfunction or damage.
Neutral voltage swings can be caused by unbalanced loads, poor grounding, or faults in the distribution network. Proper grounding systems and balanced loads help prevent such problems.
Another major issue in power quality is harmonics. Harmonics are unwanted frequencies in electrical systems that distort the waveform of voltage and current.
Harmonics can cause several problems such as overheating of transformers, malfunction of protective devices, and interference with communication systems.
Another important disturbance in power systems is interruptions, which occur when electrical power supply is temporarily lost.
Interruptions can be classified into two types:
Short-duration interruptions – power loss for a few seconds or minutes.
Sustained interruptions – power outages lasting for longer periods.
Interruptions can be caused by faults, equipment failure, severe weather conditions, or maintenance operations.
Understanding these disturbances helps engineers design reliable power systems and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply.
Questions for Section C
What is the significance of neutral voltage in power systems?
Under what conditions does neutral voltage fluctuate?
How can neutral voltage swings be prevented?
What are harmonics and their types?
What are the harmful effects of harmonics?
What are the causes of power interruptions?
What is the difference between short-duration and sustained interruptions?
Why is interruption analysis important in power systems?
Conclusion
The Power Quality exam paper evaluates knowledge at three levels. Section A focuses on basic definitions and concepts related to power disturbances. Section B examines power quality improvement techniques such as compensators, filters, and conditioning devices. Section C explores advanced topics related to harmonics, interruptions, and neutral voltage behavior in power systems.
Maintaining good power quality is essential for reliable and efficient operation of electrical power systems.
