(SEM II) THEORY EXAMINATION 2022-23 FUNDAMENTALS OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
The Fundamentals of Mechanical Engineering (BME201) Question Paper for the B.Tech Semester II (2022–23) examination is designed to evaluate the basic understanding of mechanics, thermodynamics, refrigeration, IC engines, fluid mechanics, strength of materials, and modern mechanical applications such as electric vehicles and mechatronics. Carrying a total of 70 marks, the question paper is divided into well-structured sections that assess conceptual clarity, numerical solving skills, diagram understanding, and practical engineering knowledge.
The exam begins with Section A, consisting of short conceptual questions that test basic principles of mechanical engineering. These include topics like the principle of transmissibility, types of strain, IC engine classification based on L/D ratio, definition of scavenging, ton of refrigeration, concepts of density, specific gravity, viscosity, significance of measurement, types of gears, and actuators. This section is meant to quickly evaluate a student’s fundamental understanding of mechanical engineering terminology.
Section B includes descriptive and numerical questions that require detailed explanation and calculations. Students may solve force problems on polygons, explain the working of a four-stroke CI engine with sketches, perform Carnot cycle calculations related to refrigeration effect, define Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids, derive Pascal’s law, and explain the classification and function of hydraulic valves. This section tests analytical skills and the ability to apply mechanical principles to real-world engineering situations.
In Section C, students must attempt long and multi-step questions involving numerical analysis and detailed diagrams. Topics include the calculation of Poisson’s ratio, modulus of elasticity, rigidity modulus, and bulk modulus from tensile test data; drawing the Shear Force Diagram (SFD) and Bending Moment Diagram (BMD) for a cantilever beam; explaining engine components with neat diagrams; identifying components of electric vehicles; explaining window air-conditioning systems; discussing humidity, dew point, and comfort conditions; deriving Newton’s law of viscosity; classifying turbines; explaining Francis turbine construction; discussing precision vs. accuracy; and describing the construction and working of an optical pyrometer or the fundamentals of mechatronics.
Overall, the BME201 question paper provides a complete assessment of core mechanical engineering knowledge. It helps students build a strong foundation in mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid science, refrigeration, and modern engineering technologies. The questions encourage analytical thinking, problem-solving, and a good command of mechanical engineering diagrams and concepts.
