(SEM II) THEORY EXAMINATION 2017-18 ENGINEERING PHYSICS-II
This PDF contains the complete Engineering Physics-II (RAS201) theory examination paper for B.Tech Semester-II (2017–18). It is an important academic resource for engineering students preparing for university exams, as it provides a complete overview of the question pattern, structure, and key topics covered in the Engineering Physics-II curriculum. The exam is worth 70 marks and must be completed in 3 hours, following the standard UPTU/AKTU pattern.
The paper is divided into three comprehensive sections designed to test conceptual understanding, analytical ability, derivations, and numerical problem-solving skills.
SECTION A – Short Answer Questions (Concept-Based)
This section includes seven 2-mark questions, each designed to test fundamental understanding of physics concepts. Students are asked about:
Unit cell and primitive cell definitions
Packing factor of simple cubic structure
Ionic polarization in dielectrics
Origin of magnetization in magnetic materials
Difference between conduction current & displacement current
Intrinsic vs extrinsic semiconductors
Effect of temperature on electrical resistivity of superconductors
These questions check whether the student has a strong conceptual base.
SECTION B – Medium Length Questions (Derivations & Applications)
Students must attempt any three of the five questions, each carrying 7 marks. This section includes:
Derivation of the Compton shift and explanation of unmodified radiation
Explanation of ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity with applications
Derivation of electromagnetic wave equations in free space
Concept of Fermi level in intrinsic and n-type semiconductors
Discussion on carbon nanotubes (armchair, zigzag, chiral forms)
These questions require deep understanding, proper diagram usage, and strong derivation skills.
SECTION C – Long Questions (Advanced Topics & Numericals)
In this section, the student must attempt one question from each part. These questions carry 7 marks each and are based on advanced or numerical topics such as:
Lattice planes & spacing in cubic crystals, using (h k l) indices
Laue spots and Bragg’s law in X-ray diffraction
Dielectric loss and loss spectrum of polar materials
Magnetic materials (dia-, para-, ferromagnetism)
Maxwell’s equations and their physical importance
Transverse nature of electromagnetic waves
Fermi-Dirac probability calculations
Electron concentration in semiconductors
Meissner effect and properties of superconductors
Critical field, current, and current density numericals
These questions test higher-order thinking, numerical accuracy, and ability to explain advanced engineering physics concepts clearly.
2–3 Sample Questions from the Paper (as requested)
1. Short Question (Semiconductors)
What do you mean by intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors?
2. Medium Question (Electromagnetic Waves)
Derive the electromagnetic wave equations in free space and prove that EM waves propagate with the speed of light.
3. Long Question (Superconductivity)
Discuss the Meissner effect. Show that perfect diamagnetism and zero resistivity are independent and essential properties of superconductors.
