THEORY EXAMINATION (SEM–II) 2016-17 BASIC ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
This document contains the full B.Tech Electrical Engineering Semester Examination Question Paper, designed for a maximum of 100 marks with a duration of 3 hours. The paper thoroughly evaluates a student’s conceptual understanding, analytical skills, numerical problem-solving ability, and knowledge of core electrical engineering principles. It is divided into three major sections: Section A, Section B, and Section C, with questions ranging from basic definitions to advanced calculations and theoretical explanations.
SECTION A – Short Answer Questions (10 × 2 = 20 marks)
This section includes ten short and precise conceptual questions that test fundamental understanding of electrical engineering basics. Topics include:
Unilateral and bilateral elements
Advantages of three-phase systems
Reason for calling series resonance voltage resonance
Definition of acceptor and rejector circuits
Importance of damping torque in analog instruments
Concept of phase sequence in three-phase supply
Minimizing hysteresis losses in transformers
Function of commutator in DC generator
Motors used for constant speed applications
Role of condenser in ceiling fans
These questions ensure the student has a strong theoretical foundation before moving to larger problems.
SECTION B – Five Numerical/Analytical Problems (5 × 10 = 50 marks)
Students must attempt any five out of eight 10-mark questions. These require deeper calculations and application-based solutions. Topics include:
Finding current using mesh (loop) analysis and node voltage method
Solving a parallel AC circuit for branch currents, total current, power factor, and impedance
Definition, causes, effects, and improvement of power factor
Complete analysis of a Series R–L–C resonant circuit, including resonance frequency, Q-factor, bandwidth, and half-power frequencies
Discussing transformer losses, efficiency, and maximum efficiency conditions
Construction, working, advantages, and disadvantages of moving iron instruments
Calculations related to a dc shunt machine working as generator and motor
Working principle and torque-slip characteristics of three-phase induction motor
This section tests numerical accuracy, electrical calculation techniques, and the student’s ability to analyze real engineering circuits.
SECTION C – Long Answer Questions (2 × 15 = 30 marks)
Students must attempt any two of the three long questions. These require detailed explanations, derivations, and numerical solutions. Topics include:
Q3 – Maximum Power Transfer Theorem
Statement, proof, and numerical application
Determining the value of load resistance (R) for maximum power
Calculating maximum power delivered to the load
Q4 – Quality Factor & Bandwidth + Two-Wattmeter Method
Detailed discussion on Q-factor, bandwidth, and their significance
Using two-wattmeter readings to compute:
Circuit power factor
Active & reactive power
Line current
Per-phase impedance
Q5 – Moving Coil Instrument + Double Revolving Field Theory
Designing a voltmeter using a moving coil instrument
Full-scale calculation for series resistance
Explanation of double-field revolving theory (used in induction motors)
Applications of three-phase synchronous motors
This section evaluates higher-order thinking, conceptual clarity, and the ability to connect theory with practical engineering problems.
