This examination paper is for Mechanical / Production / Automobile Engineering students.
It covers topics from Engineering Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Thermodynamics, and Manufacturing Processes.
The paper is divided into three sections that test definitions, concepts, numerical ability, and engineering applications.
SECTION – A (7 × 2 = 14 Marks)
This section contains short conceptual questions that require precise definitions.
Topics include:
Angle of friction & angle of repose
Assumptions and conditions of a truss
Resilience vs toughness
Characteristics of a couple
First law of thermodynamics
Carnot theorem
Centroid vs center of gravity
Parallel axis theorem
Varignon’s theorem
Fire tube vs water tube boilers
These questions check basic understanding and terminology.
SECTION – B (5 × 7 = 35 Marks)
This section contains medium-length theory questions and numerical problems.
Students must answer any five.
Topics include:
Working and major parts of a lathe machine
Equilibrium of cylinders on incline (force P required)
Reaction forces in truss members
Friction problem to find angle θ of impending motion
Reversible vs irreversible processes, boiler mountings & accessories
Working of 2-stroke & 4-stroke petrol engines with diagrams
Carnot engine driving a refrigerator: efficiency & COP
Kelvin–Planck and Clausius statements of second law
This section tests mechanics, thermodynamics, machine tools, friction, and engine fundamentals.
SECTION – C (2 × 10.5 = 21 Marks)
Any two long descriptive questions must be attempted:
Moment of inertia
Finding centroidal moment of inertia of a composite shaded area.
Engineering materials
Classification of materials
Difference between hot working and cold working
Definitions
Important engineering terms:
Entropy
Zeroth law
Brake power
Cone of friction
Latent heat
This section evaluates deep understanding, explanation skills, and problem-solving.
