THEORY EXAMINATION (SEM–II) 2016-17 ENGINEERING CHEMISTRY
This question paper assesses core concepts of Engineering Chemistry, including spectroscopy, polymers, water treatment, fuels, corrosion, phase rule, galvanic cells, cement chemistry, and material science.
It is divided into three sections that test definitions, numerical skills, mechanisms, and applications.
SECTION – A (7 × 2 = 14 Marks)
This section contains seven short questions, requiring brief definitions or direct numerical answers.
Topics include:
Equivalent vs non-equivalent protons
Use of magnesium blocks for corrosion protection
GCV and NCV
Formation reactions of Nylon-6,6 and Buna-S
Temporary hardness calculation
Preparation of greases
Composition and raw materials of biogas
This section checks basic fundamentals and quick concepts.
SECTION – B (5 × 7 = 35 Marks)
Students must attempt any five medium-length questions.
Topics include:
Structure/applications of fullerenes; Stoichiometric defects (Frenkel & Schottky)
Conducting polymers; Preparation & reactions of Grignard reagent
Galvanic cell principle; Setting & hardening of cement
Reverse osmosis; Scale & sludge formation in boilers and prevention
Corrosion prevention by design; Structure & lubrication properties of graphite
Proximate analysis of coal; Bomb calorimeter GCV/NCV calculation
IR spectroscopy principle, IR vibrations of XY₂, fingerprint region
TMS as NMR reference; NMR signals & splitting patterns of given compounds
This section tests theory, chemical mechanisms, and applied numericals.
SECTION – C (2 × 10.5 = 21 Marks)
Students must attempt any two long descriptive questions.
Topics include:
Phase Rule & Water System
Phase rule application to ice–water–vapour equilibrium
Quadruple point concept
Zeolite softener hardness calculation
Polymer Chemistry
Mechanism of polypropylene formation using Ziegler–Natta catalyst
Advantages over free-radical polymerization
Polymer composites
Corrosion & MO Theory
Electrochemical corrosion (oxygen absorption mechanism)
Anodic & cathodic metallic coating protection
MO diagrams of N₂ and O₂ with bond order
This section evaluates analytical reasoning, mechanisms, diagrams, and detailed conceptual understanding.
