THEORY EXAMINATION (SEM–II) 2016-17 MANUFACTURING PROCESS
This question paper evaluates the student's understanding of metalworking processes, welding, casting, machining, material properties, layouts, and manufacturing fundamentals.
It is divided into three sections covering definitions, comparisons, process explanations, and short descriptive notes.
SECTION – A (10 × 2 = 20 Marks)
This section contains ten short questions, each requiring direct answers.
Topics include:
Electrochemical coating processes (electroplating, anodizing)
Operations of a lathe machine
Aluminum alloys with compositions
Gang milling
Materials welded by neutral flame
Examples of fixed-position layout
Type of loading causing fatigue failure
Recrystallization
Function of riser in casting
Product of a cupola furnace
This section checks basic manufacturing knowledge and key terminologies.
SECTION – B (5 × 10 = 50 Marks)
Students must attempt any five descriptive questions.
Topics include:
Shaper vs planer; shaping machine drive mechanisms with sketch
Formation of arc in welding; welding power sources, advantages & limitations
Comparison: hardness vs toughness; strength vs stiffness
Hot working vs cold working with examples, advantages, and disadvantages
Types of patterns, pattern allowances, and pattern–casting differences
Properties of metal powders and applications of powder metallurgy
Ductile vs brittle fracture; meaning of creep and creep curve
This section tests understanding of processes, characteristics of materials, and practical workshop knowledge.
SECTION – C (2 × 15 = 30 Marks)
Students must attempt any two long-answer questions.
Milling Operations
Difference between up-milling and down-milling
Various work-holding devices in milling, their applications & limitations
Short Notes
High-speed steel (HSS): properties & applications
Moulding sand properties
Deep drawing operation
Composite materials
Production Concepts
Difference between production and productivity
Product layout vs process layout with examples
This section evaluates analytical ability, comparative understanding, and descriptive skills.
