This question paper evaluates concepts from casting, welding, metal forming, heat treatment, machining, properties of materials, and manufacturing tools & processes.
It is divided into three sections testing definitions, sketches, process explanations, and comparative understanding.
SECTION – A (10 × 2 = 20 Marks)
This section contains ten short-answer questions, requiring brief definitions.
Topics include:
Fatigue in metals
Soldering
Casting defects
Cold working
Copper alloys
Gates in casting
Types of cores
Properties of moulding sand
Hardening process
Wire drawing
This section evaluates fundamental concepts of manufacturing and material behavior.
SECTION – B (5 × 10 = 50 Marks)
Students must attempt any five descriptive questions involving explanations and sketches.
Topics include:
Plastics & ceramics — classification and applications
Components of a gating system; types of gates
Labeled diagram of a lathe machine; its parts & operations
Annealing processes with diagrams
Working principle & construction of cupola furnace
Classification of steel; need for alloying elements; five alloying elements & their effects
Working of milling machine; up-milling vs down-milling
Working of shaper machine; comparison between shaper and planer
This section tests process understanding, machinery knowledge, and material science concepts.
SECTION – C (2 × 15 = 30 Marks)
Students must attempt any two long-answer questions.
Metal Forming Operations
Definition and neat sketches of forging, rolling, and drawing
Welding Processes
Classification of welding processes
Principle of gas welding
Types of gas welding flames, identification, and their specific uses
Forming Processes
Meaning of forming
Extrusion process
Important components & steps involved (with neat sketch)
This section evaluates deep conceptual understanding, diagrams, and manufacturing process flow.
