Theory Examination (Semester-II) 2015-16 BASIC MANUFACTURING PROCESS
This question paper evaluates student knowledge in workshop technology, welding, casting, metal forming, heat treatment, machine tools, and manufacturing systems.
It is divided into three sections, covering definitions, medium-length answers, sketches, and long descriptive explanations.
SECTION – A (10 × 2 = 20 Marks)
This section contains short questions requiring brief explanations.
Topics include:
Components and operations of a shaper
Difference between shaper & planer
Production vs productivity
Types of production systems
Principle of oxy-acetylene welding
Types of gas flames and their uses
Annealing & normalizing of carbon steels
Electroplating & galvanizing
Tool steels and their classification
Ductile vs brittle fracture
This section checks basic manufacturing and material science concepts.
SECTION – B (5 × 10 = 50 Marks)
Students must attempt any five descriptive questions (many require neat sketches).
Topics include:
Shaper machine: components, operations, drive mechanisms
Oxy-acetylene welding: principles, flames, identification & applications
Annealing & normalizing with diagrams
Electroplating & galvanizing (process + sketches)
Tool steels, uses of copper alloys (brass/bronze)
Construction + working + applications of cupola furnace
Die casting: process with neat sketch
Ductile casting process & advantages
Slag inclusion and how to avoid it
Application of oxidizing, neutral & carburizing flame
This section tests process understanding, sketches, material behavior, and practical workshop knowledge.
SECTION – C (2 × 15 = 30 Marks)
Students must attempt any two long-answer questions.

Working principle
Construction with sketch
Operations
Limitations and applications
Production & Manufacturing
Role of materials and manufacturing in national growth
Types of production (job, batch, mass, continuous) with examples
Cupola Furnace & Related Concepts
Full working principle with labeled diagram
Advantages, limitations & casting applications
This section evaluates deep technical understanding, diagram-based explanation, and analytical skills.
