(SEM III) THEORY EXAMINATION 2023-24 TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION
This examination evaluates a student’s competence in professional communication, personality development, organizational communication systems, technical writing skills, and emotional-social competence.
It ensures students are industry-ready in terms of expression, presentation, leadership, and interpersonal communication.
The paper is divided into three structured sections, assessing both theoretical knowledge and practical application.
SECTION A – Short Answer Questions (14 Marks)
7 questions × 2 marks
This section assesses the fundamental concepts of technical and professional communication.
Students must answer all questions concisely with conceptual accuracy.
Key Areas Covered:
1. Essential Purposes of Communication
Understanding why communication is necessary in personal, academic, and professional life—such as information sharing, decision-making, motivation, and relationship building.
2. Importance of Clarity in Expert Technical Lectures
How clarity enhances understanding, reduces ambiguity, and supports audience engagement during technical presentations.
3. Role of Body Language in Interviews
Non-verbal cues such as eye contact, posture, gestures, and facial expression and their impact on interviewer perception.
4. Relevance of Group Discussion in Recruiting
Checking communication skills, critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership potential.
5. Differences Between Report and Proposal
Report = factual documentation
Proposal = persuasive document to recommend actions
6. Traits of a Leader
Confidence, empathy, decision-making, integrity, communication skills, and problem-solving.
7. Difference Between Webinar, Webcast & Podcast
Webinar = interactive
Webcast = one-way streaming
Podcast = audio-only downloadable content
This section examines clarity, definitions, and conceptual understanding.
SECTION B – Descriptive / Understanding-Based Questions (21 Marks)
Attempt any three (7 marks each)
This section tests explanation-based understanding of organizational communication, technical writing, presentation skills, and personality development.
Topics Covered:
1. Directions of Communication Flow in an Organization
Downward, upward, horizontal, diagonal, and external communication—ensuring smooth functioning and coordination.
2. Structural Elements of a Research Paper
Title, abstract, introduction, literature review, methodology, results, discussion, conclusion, references—used in conferences and journals.
3. Elevator Pitch vs Business Pitch
Difference in duration, structure, purpose, and audience.
Includes the 8-step process of pitching an idea (problem, solution, USP, market, model, traction, team, closing).
4. Cognitions, Emotions & Behavioral Skills for Social Competence
Understanding how communication influences interpersonal effectiveness, conflict management, and social adaptability.
5. Swami Vivekananda’s 5-Self Theory of Personality Development
Understanding the physical, mental, intellectual, supramental, and blissful self for holistic personality growth.
This section ensures students can explain, analyze, and differentiate key communication concepts.
SECTION C – Analytical / Application-Based Questions (35 Marks)
Students must attempt one question from each sub-section.
These questions require deep thinking, practical application, and structured writing.
C1 – Communication Barriers & Process (7 Marks)
Option A – Barriers of Communication
Classifying psychological, physical, semantic, organizational, and cultural barriers along with reasons for communication breakdown.
Option B – Cyclic Nature of Communication
Diagram-based explanation of sender → encoding → message → channel → decoding → receiver → feedback → noise.
C2 – SOP & Communication Networks (7 Marks)
Option A – Statement of Purpose
Exploring the structure of SOP: introduction, academic background, achievements, motivation, goals, and conclusion.
Option B – Formal Communication Networks
Different types: chain, wheel, Y, circle, all-channel network—used for message transmission in organizations.
C3 – Proposal & Report Structure (7 Marks)
Option A – Proposal Writing
Developing a realistic tree plantation proposal including objectives, scope, budget, benefits, location, and timeline.
Option B – Project Report Structure
Detailed components: title page, abstract, contents, introduction, analysis, data interpretation, findings, conclusion, and appendices.
C4 – Thinking Skills & Emotional Intelligence (7 Marks)
Option A – Thinking and Its Tools
Five types of thinking: critical, creative, analytical, reflective, and strategic.
Option B – Four Components of Emotional Intelligence
Self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, and social skills.
C5 – Email Writing & Maslow’s Theory (7 Marks)
Option A – Effective Email Strategies
Clarity, conciseness, tone, structure, and call-to-action.
Students must also write a formal invitation email for a blood donation camp.
Option B – Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Five tiers—physiological, safety, love/belonging, esteem, and self-actualization—related to personality development.
