(SEM III) THEORY EXAMINATION 2023-24 AUTOMATION AND ROBOTICS
This question paper is designed to assess a student’s understanding of automation, robotics, sensors, industrial production systems, and modern automation technologies. The paper is divided into three structured sections — A, B, and C, each aiming to test different levels of knowledge ranging from basic definitions to detailed analytical and application-based concepts.
Section A — Short Conceptual Questions (14 Marks)
Section A includes seven short questions, each carrying 2 marks. These questions check your fundamental understanding of core automation and robotics concepts. You are expected to briefly explain terms like automation process, the factors influencing automation, and the concept of degree of freedom, which defines how a robot or mechanism moves in space.
The questions also touch on the scope of robotics, introduce various types of sensors along with their advantages, and explore the basics of production systems used in modern industries. The section concludes with a question on mining applications, reflecting how automation plays a crucial role in improving safety and productivity in mining operations.
This section evaluates whether the student has clear foundational clarity of the subject.
Section B — Descriptive & Analytical Questions (21 Marks)
This section requires students to attempt any three questions out of five, each carrying 7 marks. The questions here test your ability to explain, analyze, and integrate concepts in depth.
One of the major areas covered is the role of automation in Industry 4.0, including how modern manufacturing uses advanced technologies like robotics, IoT, cyber-physical systems, and artificial intelligence to improve productivity. Another question explores the laws of robotics, beginning with Asimov's classical laws and their relevance, followed by modern classifications that shape safe and ethical robot operation.
The section also includes a question on transducers and sensor classifications, requiring you to describe their applications across different automation systems. Another question asks you to explain the fundamentals of Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM), showing how computers coordinate design, production, and quality systems. The last question focuses on automation in entertainment, requiring discussion about modern applications such as animatronics, VR control systems, and the challenges like cost, maintenance, and safety concerns.
Overall, Section B ensures that students demonstrate deeper comprehension and the ability to connect theory with real-world implementation.
Section C — Application-Based / Advanced Questions (21 Marks)
Section C contains seven-mark questions, and the student must attempt one part from each question. These questions require analytical thinking, diagrammatic explanation, and application of theoretical concepts.
The first question asks students to discuss open-loop and closed-loop control systems, detailing how feedback affects automation stability and accuracy. Alternatively, students can discuss the requirements of automation and the various classifications such as fixed, programmable, and flexible automation.
Other questions involve explaining forward and inverse kinematics, which are essential in robotics for determining a robot’s movement and joint configurations. Another question highlights ethical implications of automation — touching on job displacement, privacy issues, safety protocols, and long-term societal impacts.
Further, the paper covers classifications of controllers, essential for industrial automation, and questions on hard-wired systems and PLC types, showing depth in control technologies. Advanced topics like automation in production systems, Group Technology (GT), and Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) are also evaluated.
The final question deals with industrial applications of automation and robotics in material handling, requiring detailed explanations of systems such as conveyors, robotic arms, AGVs, automated warehouses, and how these technologies improve productivity, safety, and accuracy.
Overall Description of the Paper
This examination paper tests the student’s ability to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of automation and robotics, covering both foundational principles and advanced industrial applications. The questions encourage critical thinking, practical understanding, and the ability to apply theoretical knowledge to manufacturing, control systems, production automation, robotics kinematics, and modern Industry 4.0 environments.
Students are expected to explain concepts clearly, support answers with diagrams where needed, and connect automation principles with real-life industrial scenarios. The structure of the paper ensures assessment across:
Basic definitions & fundamentals
Detailed descriptive knowledge
Analytical reasoning & application
Problem-solving in automation systems
Technological impact evaluation
This makes the exam balanced, testing both understanding and application skills in the field of Automation & Robotics.
