(SEM III) THEORY EXAMINATION 2023-24 BASICS OF DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS
This question paper is designed to evaluate a student’s understanding of core concepts of Database Management Systems (DBMS), covering the foundations of data modeling, relational theory, SQL commands, normalization, and transaction management. The structure includes three major sections, each crafted to test different levels of depth—from fundamental definitions to analytical and application-level problems.
SECTION A – Short Conceptual Questions (14 Marks)
This section contains seven short descriptive questions, each carrying 2 marks, aimed at testing the student’s basic understanding of DBMS vocabulary and fundamental theory.
Questions focus on:
The meanings of key terms such as data model schema, instance, functional dependency, and transaction.
Basic components of an ER diagram.
The relational data model and integrity constraints.
Introductory concepts like SQL and its purpose in DBMS.
This section checks whether students understand foundational concepts that support all advanced database topics.
SECTION B – Descriptive & Analytical Questions (21 Marks)
Students must attempt any three out of the five given questions. Each question carries 7 marks and requires deeper explanation or analysis.
Topics include:
The idea behind generalization, aggregation, and reduction in ER design.
Detailed explanations of relational constraints such as key constraints, domain constraints, and examples of applying them.
Practical SQL examples using INSERT, DELETE, and UPDATE commands.
Understanding lossless join decomposition and conditions for preserving information during normalization.
The concept of two-phase locking (2PL) in concurrency control, its working, importance in ensuring serializability, and limitations.
This section tests not just knowledge but also the ability to apply concepts in database modeling and system design.
SECTION C – Applied & Problem-Oriented Questions (21 Marks)
Students must attempt one question from each pair, making a total of three answers. Each question carries 7 marks and requires explanation, derivation, or conceptual application at an advanced level.
Topics include:
The architecture of a DBMS, focusing on levels of abstraction and how data flows across different layers.
Step-by-step conversion of ER diagrams into relational tables and the challenges involved.
Relational algebra operations like SELECT, PROJECT, CROSS JOIN, and different types of JOINs.
SQL joins (INNER, LEFT, RIGHT, FULL) with examples, along with the use and advantages of views.
Minimal cover of functional dependencies and fourth normal form related to multi-valued dependencies.
Serializability of transaction schedules, conflict and view serializability, and how to test whether a given schedule ensures consistency.
This section evaluates a student’s ability to think critically, analyze database operations, and apply theoretical concepts to practical scenarios.
Overall Purpose of the Paper
The question paper thoroughly measures a student’s capability in:
Database design principles using ER modeling
Relational database theory and constraints
SQL querying and manipulation
Normalization and dependency analysis
Transaction management techniques
Concurrency control and serializability
By covering all levels—from definition to advanced analysis—the exam ensures students are well-prepared for real-world database development and management.
