(SEM III) THEORY EXAMINATION 2023-24 ANALOG ELECTRONICS CIRCUITS
This question paper is designed for the B.Tech (Semester III) Theory Examination 2023-24 for the subject Analog Circuits & Amplifiers. The paper evaluates a student’s understanding of fundamental and advanced concepts of analog electronics, including biasing techniques, transistor models, feedback mechanisms, oscillators, current mirrors, and differential amplifiers.
The question paper is divided into three structured sections, each targeting different levels of cognitive ability—from basic definitions to analytical and design-based questions.
SECTION A – Conceptual & Short Answer Questions (14 Marks)
This section consists of seven brief questions, each carrying 2 marks, and focuses on essential definitions and fundamental concepts.
Students are tested on topics such as:
Bias stability in transistor amplifiers
Transconductance and cascode configurations
Types of oscillators
Barkhausen criterion
Differential amplifier characteristics (CMRR, ICMR)
Difference between inverting and non-inverting amplifiers
These questions check the student’s clarity of foundational principles.
SECTION B – Descriptive & Analytical Questions (21 Marks)
Students must attempt any three out of five questions, each carrying 7 marks.
These questions require detailed explanations, derivations, comparisons, and circuit-level reasoning.
Topics include:
BJT biasing schemes with advantages and disadvantages
Feedback topologies in amplifiers and their effects
Colpitts oscillator analysis including frequency derivation
Current mirror characteristics and load limitations
Schmitt trigger operation and applications
This section tests the student’s ability to analyze circuits, understand device behavior, and explain practical implementation.
SECTION C – Advanced & Application-Oriented Questions (21 Marks)
This section contains five sets, each with two choices, and the student must attempt one question from each set.
Each question carries 7 marks.
This part examines deeper understanding of:
Small-signal models and amplifier behavior
FET biasing methods
High-frequency transistor models and amplifier frequency response
Effects of feedback on gain, bandwidth, stability, gain margin & phase margin
Non-sinusoidal oscillators for generating waveforms like square and triangular signals
Barkhausen criterion and oscillator fundamentals
Questions in this section emphasize problem solving, circuit modelling, frequency response analysis, and conceptual clarity required for practical analog design.
Overall Purpose of the Question Paper
This paper aims to thoroughly assess students on:
Understanding of transistor operation and amplifier design
Ability to derive formulas and analyze electronic circuits
Knowledge of feedback, oscillators, and stability criteria
Skill to interpret device characteristics and apply theoretical models
Practical reasoning relating to the behavior of analog circuits
The structure ensures a balanced evaluation of memory, understanding, application, analysis, and design skills.
