(SEM III) THEORY EXAMINATION 2022-23 ENGINERRING MECHANICS
This question paper belongs to the subject ENGINEERING MECHANICS (KCE-301) for B.Tech (First Year) students. It is designed to evaluate the student's understanding of fundamental engineering mechanics concepts that form the base for all mechanical, civil, and structural engineering applications.
The paper carries a total of 100 marks and is divided into three structured sections—Section A, Section B, and Section C—ensuring a balanced assessment of conceptual clarity, numerical solving ability, and analytical thinking.
Section A – Short Conceptual Questions
This section contains 10 brief questions, each testing essential theoretical concepts of engineering mechanics. Students are assessed on their understanding of:
Basic laws of forces and equilibrium
Centroid and moment of inertia
Friction, motion, and kinematics
Trusses, beams, and stress–strain fundamentals
Work–energy and impulse–momentum principles
These questions measure a student's foundational knowledge and ability to recall definitions, formulas, and basic principles.
Section B – Descriptive & Numerical Problems
This section requires students to attempt any three questions.
Questions are longer, more detailed, and involve:
Numerical calculations
Free body diagram construction
Application of Newtonian mechanics
Problems on friction, trusses, centroid calculation, virtual work, and mechanical systems
This section checks the student’s ability to apply formulas, understand physical systems, solve engineering numericals, and interpret results.
Section C – Long/Analytical Problems
Students must attempt any two questions.
These questions require deeper thought and step-by-step detailed solutions. Topics typically include:
Analysis of beams and frames
Projectile motion or kinetics
System dynamics
Advanced numerical problems involving combined concepts
This section evaluates higher-order thinking, analytical capability, and the ability to connect multiple concepts to solve complex engineering problems.
Overall Purpose of the Question Paper
The ENGINEERING MECHANICS question paper is structured to ensure students:
Understand fundamental engineering principles
Can apply mathematical and analytical methods
Are able to solve real-life engineering problems
Develop strong conceptual clarity for future subjects like SOM, Fluid Mechanics, Machine Design, and Structural Analysis
It serves as a comprehensive examination of the student’s ability to analyze mechanical systems and forces—a core skill in engineering disciplines.
